Trees in Space

I'm having some trouble planting trees in a space station. The saplings keep dying. How do I go about getting trees in space? I think I understand the mechanics of oxygen generation but I'm stuck on this point.

Reading around I've found things that imply it's possible and necessary to generate oxygen, e.g. the Technic wiki page on Galacticraft says this:

"Oxygen is available in the station using a combination of trees and oxygen machines included with the mod."

Hi, in order for saplings to survive, they need to be within a certain distance of at least 4 water source blocks.
