Problems with connecting to a server from the launcher

I am have problems connecting to a server from my Tekkit Classic where when trying to connect to a server, when it says "Logging In" it will give me a plane background with no text on and then the text will reappear and then disappear and the background will then go a little darker than it was and then it will come up with a light grey color and crash completely.

What do I do to counter this problem and fix it for good?
