How to hello world and beyond in Minecraft?

Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to start out my Minecraft modding adventures, I've tried starting it 4 times now. It always goes: MCP -> Making your first block -> ?

So I'm curious, what routes would you advise to one who is an absolute newbie to programming in Java and doesn't know how to use APIs such as Mod Loader and Minecraft Forge Mod Loader?

Please post your routes and suggestions below, what did you go through to get to where you are now?

The Forge wiki has some good tutorials on various things that you can code for. It's not comprehensive, but it's usually kept as updated as possible.
