Running the best possible server

I was wondering if there is anyway to make the server run a bit smoother without jut pouring more RAM into it. Any thing I can turn of for a small bonus?

Logically assuming that just turning off any mods you don't want/ think are needed, should reduce the amount of lag. This however requires clients to do the same. This is all just based on a logical assumption that less mods = less shit going on everywhere = less lag. But RAM dumping would do the trick
