Server set up issues

I'm trying to set up a server so a few of my friends and I can play but matter how I try it doesn't work. I have tried with hamachi and port forwarding. I have watched a bunch of tutorials and none have worked. The server runs fine but no matter what I do I can't connect. I have tried updating java, turning my firewall off, and whatever else these tutorials have told me. Is there something I'm missing or has anyone else had this problem who can help?
