Hexxit Server Help?

My friend and I wanted to play hexxit together. I've made servers before, but only Vanilla MC servers. I know my IP and everything, but yet it won't work? When my friend joins, it just says that it timed out. I can join easily and everything works for me. It is not over Lan, he is using an external ip (I think thats the right word) and it works in normal Minecraft.

Is there something different than normal Minecraft servers, or do you know what I did wrong?

You need a Hexxit server to play Hexxit.
