How to copy environment to another machine

I'm trying to set up my son with MC on a different computer without losing all of his work. Just copying the .technic and .minecraft directory trees doesn't seem to do it--the program seems to crash when I press "play" on the launcher. If necessary, I can provide the logs--but is there some relatively quick and easy process for doing this? Thanks...

You may also need to worry about the installed/working Java version and any issues you might encounter with antivirus or firewall on the other computer. I have had no issues copying Minecraft and/or the Technic Launcher directories or individual modpacks to another computer.
