Can't place items which are from mods

I have started a server recently but when I go to go online I can not place or spawn In items from mods only vanilla blocks can be placed. Also when ever I go to launch my server the launcher comes up saying minecraft server instead of voltZ server it is really starting to annoy me and any suggestions we be most helpful :)
