Upgrading existing portals to enhanced portals.

After playing for some time, I have two portals in the overworld, and one in the nether (well, maybe two, actually. I only used the second overworld portal to test the portal mod). Now that I have crafted the dial device, I presume I have to have someone physically present at each portal in the overworld to install the devices before I can get them to connect to each other. 

 

My question is, once overworld portals are given dial devices, if I haven't created addresses for their counterparts in the nether, how can I continue using the portals as vanilla nether portals?

Whats the problem with creating a temporary vanilla portal to use to get back to the nether and setting it up there?
