Cant verify minecraft username fix?

I'm new to the forums so forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong area. When ever my friend tries to join my 2.1.1 tekkit server we receive an error saying, "can't verify minecraft username." If anyone knows what's or why this is happening please let me know.

Tell your friend to use his email to log on instead of his username.
