Tekkit has a low fps

I have a relatively good system, one that shouldn't be lagging out to this game. Changing the graphics settings to the lowest doesn't do anything and my fps remains the same as it was on maximum settings. My fps is stuck on 24-40 fps and never goes beyond that but certainly goes below 24 even when there are only trees (on a new world even) and I haven't built anything.

You can check if your performance issues are actually lag spikes caused by security/anti-virus software constantly interfering. Create an exception for Tekkit and see if that helps.

Other than that, maybe Optifine can help you tweak settings for more acceptable performance. It usually does not double the fps as claimed, but it will enable a wide range of graphics options otherwise unavailable in Minecraft. Make sure to get the latest 1.6.4 build for Tekkit.
