The creator of Thaumcraft probably won't even need to make SMP support since 1.3 merges singleplayer and multiplayer together.

This is because the wooden axe is used as a tool for worldedit. Try using a stone axe and see if that works. -
If you were to place a chunkloading block in the nether would the chunk still load without a player being in the nether? I know this wouldn't work on singleplayer but I'm not sure about a server.
