Strange noises.

I was on a multiplayer game with a friend and when mining we both started to hear portal like whining noises we started to try and sound whore it to see which direction it was coming from. which resulted inus mining all over the place for half an hour breaking 4 or 5 picks each as the sound seemed to be moving as we followed it it really creeped me out and im still a bit paranoid in real world right now any suggestions as to what could be causing this noise?

It could be noises made by Atmos mod, you can turn it off by pressing F7, or it could be from normal minecraft, super-natrual sounds can be made when there is a large, dark area, especialy when you are in a cave, try light up the area and dig around to see if there's any other caves nearby.

It's probably Herobrine stalking you. Oh wait, that's right, I forgot they removed it in the last update.
