Out of memory!

Kingrames

Question

Launcher Version: 1.0.1.3

Operating System: Win 7 x64 Pro

Java Version: 1.7

Antivirus Program: Avast

Description of Problem:

Running any mod pack causes crashes, white screens that last forever, or crash messages that say "Out of memory!"

I've upgraded my version of Java, didn't seem to work.

My PC is quad core and has 4 gigs of ram but I don't seem to be able to increase the amount of ram that can be used to play the game. It caps out at 1.5G and won't let me play with more.

Error Messages:

Out of memory!

Minecraft has run out of memory.

This could be caused by a bug in the game or by the Java Virtual Machine not being allocated enough memory. If you are playing in a web browser, try downloading the game and playing it offline.

To prevent level corruption, the current game has quit.

We've tried to free up enough memory to let you go back to the main menu and back to playing, but this may not have worked. Please restart the game if you see this message again.

That's a strange Java version number. Could you clarify where it's come from? Latest Java from Oracle is 7 update 7. Maybe a typo by you?

I don't remember where I found it (properties of Java I think), but it appears as 1.7.....(insert a bunch more numbers)

OP, are you running anything else while trying to play?

In java properties I have both 1.6 and 1.7 (newest version) listed, and 1.6 is disabled.

If there's any other way to disable the older java after installing the newest version, I haven't seen it.

I downloaded the 64 bit version of Java, and there's no reason why anything in my system would believe it's not in 64 bit mode. If that's the key, then please point me in the direction where I can fix it.

source:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Java SE 7u7, JDK.

JDK contains the JRE and the development kit, so there shouldn't be anything missing.

wow, um, this is bizarre. when I ran the launcher just now it gave me the option to increase the max ram to 4gb and when I did, it ran fine. just flew around for 5 minutes and memory usage sat at 1.571 GB for the whole duration. Can't test it more at the moment but I'll give it some more tests later. Thank you guys for your willingness to help so far. if it still doesn't work with texture packs I'll be sure to tell you.

If a texture pack breaks it it is likely just using too much memory on your computer, I am glad you fixed it and definately post if you find new info on what caused your issue. Thanks :)
