Trojan Warning during installation

briggsred

Question

While launching the Technic Launcher and downloading the pack I received a warning from Microsoft Security Essentials warning of a high-risk trojan horse. I promptly deleted the offender and tried launching the game, it worked.

Specifically it was this one: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?name=Exploit%3aJava%2fCVE-2008-5353.WX&threatid=2147641030

And yes, I did notice someone else commented about it on the first page, I just specifically listed what it was to you for investigation.

Edit: Well it launched successfully the first time, but when I closed the application and restarted it Minecraft wouldn't launch. I'm going to try a fresh install.

Thanks for actually bringing something new to the table.

According to microsoft, it only affects certain versions of java 5 and 6, so anyone using technic should be safe.

What's probably happening here, is that the launcher behaves in a way that affects how and where java runs, and microsoft sees that as dangerous.

Thank you Jay, I had a feeling it was Microsoft's classic paranoia.

That's actually not unique to microsoft, nor is it overly paranoid. It's part of how antiviruses work, identifying hazardous code and things that are similar to it.
