Launcher Version: Any version past recommended.

Operating System: Windows Vista

Java Version: Latest

Antivirus Program: Whatever crap comes with the Windows disc

Description of Problem:

Anytime I try to update past the recommended build, the minecraft.jar progress bar stops at 98%, and says 'Update Failed!'

Nope, incorrect. It's a proven issue with the launcher and the fact that there is no 1.4.4 to 1.4.2 patch yet (or something like that, maybe it was a problem with an incorrect directory URL on the file server).
