Trouble allocating ram.

I know how to allocate the ram. I have 8gb in my computer and I used to have the option of allocating 7 gigs. But I just started up the launcher and now the most I can allocate is one. How do I fix this?

You need 64 bit java

And don't allocate so much, over 4GB is counter-productive.
