I came here because you people seem more competent than any other forum I've come across.

I'll dive right in since there's a lot to tell.

I have an idea of a theme based Minecraft server. Yes, Minecraft, not Tekkit. The closest thing it would compare to would be Skyrim. I want to make a map limited to 3.000 blocks, starting from spawn. The whole idea behind this is that there would be 3-4 major cities where PvP wouldn't be allowed. In the wilderness PvP would be allowed. The towns themselfs would have an economy of some sort based on ores and/or services. In the wilderness you could form bandit squads to kill and mug other people.

This sounds good on paper, however, when it comes down to actually do this, it's a lot harder that I originally thought it would.

I figured I'd need a plugin for towns(Towny comes to mind) and another plugin for allowing bandit squads to be formed(Factions), but from what I can tell Factions and Towny don't really work well together.

Anyway, I want to know if what I have in mind is even possible to begin with. I'm not a genius when it comes to plugins.

You could replace Towny with Worldguard to protect the cities. That should provide all the protection you need.

I don't know the name of a map limiting plugin, but they certainly exist.

Would you be allowing mining in this? Perhaps only in certain areas to make the game more RP(Worldguard again would allow this sort of control), which a plugin could make regenerate after a certain amount of time? It's just an idea, but it seemed to fit the theme of your server quite nicely so I thought I'd suggest it.

I have thought of this, replacing Towny with WG, I went for Towny because it allows ranks, by default, it has taxes and other pleasant features. I'd rather ditch Factions OR replace it with a lighter plugin that would allow some sort of party to be formed so that bandit squads are actually squads.

World border to limit the map to 3000 blocks or what ever size u want great plugin it will even load all the chunks in the area if you run the command

I don't really think you need a plugin for bandit squads really... as long as you allow for that style of play, it will happen naturally.

Personally I would stick to just protecting the towns and cities, and let the wilderness figure itself out without any additional protections.

I'd probably also recommend you put in a nice big boarder round your cities so players don't destroy the landscape immediately around or to and from them. (Read claim your city size x2)

Unless your using Spout, there's no real way for players to feel like their part of party that you can implement anyway.

(P.S. Mind if I steal your idea? And set one of these up myself? :D)

Have at it. If you do setup one, please(!), tell me how you did it and how'd it go overall.

I think that this idea can be used in Tekkit, but a little differently. Instead of having the two teams fight the whole time, in the beginning, it is peaceful. This can be called "Cold War Tekkit," because each city is racing to build a nuclear bomb. Both cities also have to prepare reinforcements. After, say, 30 minutes, the walls between the two sides come down. It is possible that, considering that each side has around 30 people, they would be able to make a nuclear bomb in just that time if they work together.

Sure... just you'd have to reset the map every day or so.

Seems more like an event to me, rather than a map/theme.

+ 60players on Tekkit? thats some pretty intense server loading there.

Yeah... wait is it impossible to have Tekkit with 60+ players? How much RAM would be necessary?

OVER 9000 Gigabytes!

(I apologize for the meme. I couldn't help myself.)

Seriously though, it would be a lot of RAM. Like, several metric shit-tons of RAM.
