The project table isn't used with pipes, for that you want an Auto Crafting Table

The project table remembers the recipe you put on it and pulls materials from it's internal inventory, every shift click gives a stack or as many as possible without breaking the recipe, or if that condition can't be met IE you only put enough for 1 on it acts like a regular crafting table
