So... how do I exactly get a pack into the launcher?

I just got a forum account, and I'm interested in getting a custom mod pack. (By the way, this doubles as a request for a modpack with the Zeppelin mod.) But I don't know if you mod Minecraft directly, or are you supposed to put it in the "Custom Pack" slots! Help me please!
