Server problems

Hello, I installed my server and no matter which version i install , when i select the matching client, I can connect. My problem is that beyond vanilla minecraft i can not build anything. not even gears. Any one have any ideas why the mods are not loading?

Methinks you may be missing a step based on the information given, you are launching the server from minecraft server.jar instead of the modfile, you should be launching the server from server.bat(win) or server.sh(*nix-mac) that or you need to give us more to go on, because I don't see why other than that you should be seeing an issue.
