I can't log in, help!!!!

Hello, I can't log in to the launcher. I am using the jar, and the login button,options button, and mod select button is greyed out. I do have the real minecraft, not some rip off version downloaded online. I see no reason why this wouldn't work, because obviously no one else is having these problems. Also, I am using minecraft 1.2.5. If I should be using a different version, please tell me. Help!

try selecting a mod pack. failing that, make sure you put your username/password in.

That shouldn't matter since the launcher works completely separate from your regular Minecraft, and auto patches you to the correct version that you need. You are probably just not selecting a mod to play from the dropdown in the top left corner like freakachu said.
