Black Screen then Crash on SMP

Last night (and still this morning) I was on a Big Dig 1.3.9 SMP server. Upon placing one of many liquiducts (no liquid running through these yet), my screen went black (except for the UI elements like the MMPS armor power and items at bottom) and then the whole client crashed after 5-10 seconds.

I had a similar issue (that I never reported) on Hexxit a couple of times. Both times it seemed to go away randomly after a lot of disconnects. In this instance, it seemed to go away briefly when I changed some of my graphics settings (specifically Fancy -> Fast), and as soon as I changed it back it froze again, but I wasn't able to reproduce this as a fix/break.
