noob question can steam engine power more then 1 machine?

Are you talking about connecting it directly, or via some sort of energy conduit? If you run energy conduit, it can supply power to multiple machines (if no conduit, then it has only one "business end"). The real bottleneck is just how much MJ/t the engine provides and how much your machines need. The Steam Engine provides 2 MJ/t, last I saw.

If you're trying to figure out which conduit to use, I prefer Redstone Energy Conduit to Buildcraft Conductive Pipes, but that seems to be a largely personal preference, especially with big changes on the horizon as we look forward to an eventual new release/upgrade. And the Conductive Pipes are built with cheaper resources, if I remember correctly.
