Question

The drop down menu in the options doesn't work correctly. Selecting 1GB allocates 596MB and selecting anything else allocates 247MB. Is there a configuration file I can change? I'd prefer to use the launcher over a .bat to allocate memory to minecraft.

Interesting, I put mine to 2GB and it set the amount in game to 1GB. It might be that the math is wrong in that section of the launcher, maybe someone forgot to close a bracket or something.

The value in the launcher sets the max mem value, in java it only uses what you need varies from 120mb and up depending on what you do. Optifine actually recommends you only use 256mb as it performs better. Press f3 and see what the max allocation is.

I did. That's why I have the numbers in my original post.

Strange but mine doesn't seem to do anything, i put it on 16gb but in game in f3 mode it says i have 247 mb , technic jesu's solution fixed it though, but nonetheless the memory allocation thing doesn't seem to do anything...

Mine had the options 512 mb (literally how much RAM my computer has), 1 GB, and 2GB. There may have been one else. I'll take a look at the actual amount used tomorrow. I don't feel like waiting for Minecraft to take it's sweet ol' time to start up and load my level. (Takes about 6 or 7 minutes.)
