Multiple Glitches on Server?

Question

Posted

Hi everyone,

Got some issues I'm hoping to get resolved if possible.

Launcher/pack Version: Tekkit 2.1.1

Operating System: Ubuntu 11.10

Version of Java: JDK 7u3

Description of Problem: Multiple

Server Info (Dedicated box)

MB: ASUS M2N-SLI

RAM: 8GB (Can't remember the type off hand)

Originally had 3GB allocated to Minecraft, now 5GB.

Processor: AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+

Players: Total 8, white-list

The problem is this, when an individual is off-line their items don't accumulate power or other items during ticks. An example of this, throw a bunch of wood into some coke ovens, log out, and when you come back the next morning they would all be made into charcoal. Now if you do this, they may or may not have been made into charcoal.

--Current Problem List

EE Collector's & Condensor's not accumulating EE Points and generation of items when off-line.

IC2 Solar and Wind Generator's not producing power and/or storage boxes not receiving/storing said power.

Coke Ovens not producing charcoal/oil.

All Ender Chests wiped their inventories (happened just this morning, but may have been due to a stop and restart of the server).

All this started happening about 2-4 weeks ago, and it does not happen with the entire group. It was originally with one player, and increasing the RAM allocation on the server seemed to fix it. Now it has become more widespread, and there is one very interesting part to all of this. I had 7 coke ovens in operation, 1 of them was in it's "own" 8x8 block section, with the other 6 in about 3-4 others. The 6 coke ovens functioned as normal and produced charcoal even when I was not logged in, but the 7th did not. My group has done research and there are plenty of other servers out there running just fine with a lot less.

We have several theories of why this may be occuring:

1) Ubuntu 11.10

2) Something specific with the motherboard which may be causing this

3) Poor system for a server

4) Hmmm...???

Current plan of attack:

1) Try different OS(s)

2) See if using my main system (ASUS P6T Deluxe, i7 920, 12GB RAM) as the server works (though will most likely put Linux on it instead of using my Win 7 OS)

Hopefully I explained it well enough, and hopefully someone knows or has other thoughts what may be going on. Any help on this would be very appreciative.

Oh, I do have a vent server running also on the server.

TIA!

Hi everyone,

Got some issues I'm hoping to get resolved if possible.

EE Collector's & Condensor's not accumulating EE Points and generation of items when off-line.

IC2 Solar and Wind Generator's not producing power and/or storage boxes not receiving/storing said power.

For the EE stuff, are there chunk loader blocks around to keep the chunks loaded when they are not around? Also, I believe that if EVERYONE logs off the server, shit doesnt continue to run even with chunk loaders. Ran into some issues with that on my small server. Not sure if there is anything you can do about that.

About the IC2 power, is this always a problem, or only when nobody is around? If its always a problem, I am guessing it is set up inproperly, such as the bat box is at the bottom of the cabling instead of the top near the generators and the wires are losing all the small eu packets in wire-length related loss. If it is only when nobody is around, probably same as above.

Can't help with the coke ovens, never used railcraft myself.

As for the ender chest, I lost the contents of mine once when the computer hosting my server crashed. Then again, i had just put items into it during that same session, so i assumed it just rolled back to the previous state.

We learned early on for EE to log off right next to, or near, the collectors, relays, etc. When we did not do this, they would not collect. And all the items were still collecting, even if everyone was logged off, until this problem recently. The tick issue seems to be per player, as some do not have this issue and some do, and others it comes and goes. We have had one player with the tick issue, go off-line for awhile to see if whatever they did fix an item, with 2+ of us still on when they went off-line, and it still would not collect.

Now we do know that a quarry and a few other goodies do not work if no one is near or the player is not on-line, but EE EMC collection and IC2 power generation, along with the coke ovens used to work just fine regardless if someone was on or not.

And this is going to sound a bit stupid, chunk loader blocks? NM, read up on what they do, but have never had a need to use them before.

As for the IC2 power, so far it has affected only one player, and they took their power array down twice. First time setup after the take down, still wasn't working when he wasn't on-line. 2nd time it finally did work.

I am pretty sure everything is related. Another player and I had a 3x3 pool of infinite water setup, with a pump above the center to take the water. He had a pump powered by 4 redstone engines going to a water strainer to see how good it would be to generate power. He would log off for the night and come back to ALL his 3x3 pools being empty. I had 2 pumps close together, but in their own 3x3 pools, being powered by a peat engine each. One pool was not having any issue, but the other pool would be half "drained" with only a 1x3 strip still being infinite.

Everything was running fine, until we started this world to add more players...so it has us all stumped as to what's going on.

Chunk loader blocks are cool. Firstly, to understand chunks and how they are normally loaded (skip this part if you already know this) In SSP, the world loads and keeps loaded every chunk you visit until you log off, so it isnt normally a problem. In SMP it only loads like 20 chunks around each player. That means if nobody is near machinery, such as a quarry, it will not do anything even if people are still online elsewhere because that section of the map is not loaded on the server.

You can force 5 chunks to stay loaded at all times using a chunk loader block, crafted by a lapis surrounded in 8 iron bars. Place one and press F9 to see which chunks are being kept loaded. There is a chance that this is causing your issues, and the people whose machines are working already have chunk loaders keeping their machines loaded on the server at all times and just didnt mention it. I believe Notch chanced the way chunks are kept loaded at some point, so this could explain why you didn't have this issue before. Or I could be completely off-base. Either way it is something you can try, and chunk loaders are nice to know about anyway.

No one's been running chunk loaders. I know this because none of us knew there were some in the game, and also because I've seen their places from in-game and out-game perspectives. Also, everything was working just fine without them and collecting EMC or generating EU without a block loader when no one was near.

Of course, now knowing about the chunk loader, it explains why the bore never made it too far when no one was near it...

First thing I would try is putting the devices in range of chunk loaders and give it a day to see if they worked when nobody was on, simply because it is an easy thing to try.

If that doesn't work, if it were my server I would try creating a test world and build some EE flowers/EU generators to see if they work when people are offline in a new clean world. If it still doesn't work, back up your world and nuke your server folder and do a clean install (hopefully you don't have a bunch of extra mods and settings.) and possibly again create a clean world on a clean install... with chunk loaders. See if you can get it to work under ideal conditions. Narrow down if it is the server, or the world, or the mechanics causing the problem.

Thanks for your help, and I'll be trying this out (or my players will along with myself).

It could easily be a chunk loading issue, as we had 5 players and everything was fine. Started a new world when 2 more were added, and there were inconsistencies...

I don't think any of us thought about the chunk loading fully. I did slightly, but didn't know what could be done to fix it. Guess I really should see if I can find wiki's on all the mods that are installed in tekkit!

But thanks again!

Looks like the EE and IC2 tick issue fixed itself with the chunk loader blocks, but now to figure out why a pump is completely draining the 3x3 infinite water pools. I'll do some reading on the rules for attaching photo's and show you what I mean.

Now...where did my water go when I was not on-line?

Some weird shit happens when NOBODY is online that chunk loader blocks can not fix. Infinite water pools will drain, items will not burn in lava, some other shit with items in pipes and machines that can cause tons of items to drop on the ground.

For me on my little private server, that issue was solved by connecting all my machines to a master switch in my house using wireless redstone and shutting everything off when I logged off for the night. When I did not do this, certain things would drop tons of items on the ground causing tons of lag, and my combustion engine array would explode from lack of water. For a larger server I actually thought about this, you could have a "master" account that stays logged into the server 24/7.

We never used to have ANY issues, then we went from 5 to 7 players on the server...then everything started not to work...

I did learn about the combustion engines not cooling, as that area had a nice crater made from about 4 combustion engines I had in operation and logged out with them running. Came back the next morning, and while I did not hear anything there must have been a "Big Badda Boom" (also the world name on my server) since all my combustion engines were gone and 3/4 of my peat engines that were next to them. Oh, and there was a big hole in the ground...

Main reason I have been bringing all the issues up here, is we never used to have them with 5 players. Added two more players and started a new world...and everything breaks! :D
