I have 64 bit java installed is there something I need to do in system preferences to allow java itself to access more RAM?

Sorry if this is the wrong board can't figure out where else to post it. I have 6 GB of memory, and my Technic launcher is only letting me cap it at 1 GB. Anybody know how to fix this (most modpacks crash from lack of memory)?
