  1. You can cheat it some with world edit I suppose. It's still an enormous task that you will need an army for though.
  2. The main point was that robots do it cheaper, and safer. As humans are comparatively fragile, and require big, expensive life support systems. Even though the rover can only go 500m a day it has the potential to be active for as much as 7 years. Humans can't beat that.
  3. I am sorry, however your argument makes so little sense I am having difficulty considering it as an argument. Are you trolling me, or are you just that disillusioned? @munaus I'm looking at the video you sent me, the first speaker who delivers a testimony of '86 already contradicts all radar accounts from before '86 as he said this was the first recorded radar sighting. Immediately after him we have several people claiming such incidents before '86. I haven't finished the vid yet, but I'll get back on it after I do.
  4. The materials that they would harvest from us are abundant in the universe, and freely harvested from uninhabited systems nearer to them. As for the slave thing read my last sentence. @ DanielJin With higher intellect comes higher level moral values, and insight. Therefore putting us in a zoo would not fit with the level of intellect required to come to us. It's also not a reasonable objective considering the incredible amount of resources required to come here. Are they really going to spend the energy of an entire star system to travel to us, and kidnap us for a zoo display? Is having humans in a zoo really that important?
  5. They won't, they never have, and probably never will visit us as intelligent beings. I'm very much open to ideas like panspermia, other than that I'm very sure about aliens not ever having visited us. For the future we're not interesting (yet) enough for a higher intelligence to come visit us. The resources on our planet are abundant in the universe, we as a species are self-destructive, and we have no real power to fear or covet. There just isn't any justification for another intelligent species to spend the resources needed to visit us. Oh and if an alien race wants to use us as slaves, why not build robotics ones that, don't whine, die, starve, or get sick.
  6. We already do plenty of travelling to Mars, we send probes and see what happens. The cost of this is comparatively low to the cost of sending humans there. The probes can do the same things humans can, but for much longer as they do not require life support. And they won't cause human loss in the event of an accident. The only reason I can think of for sending humans to another planet would be to popularise space flight again, which although important holds no scientific value. Or, act as diplomats to an alien intelligence, which we have yet to find, and are unlikely to find, ever. Sure there is lots of life, it would be very arrogant of me to say that we're the only living creatures in the universe. The big issue though is distance, without faster than light travel going to another star which has a planet in orbit that supports life would take thousands of years.
  7. it does if you manually install it, http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/3-1-2-24-7-mature-tekkitia-a-small-friendly-server-30-slot.18094/ the guy that wrote the OP on this has a decent tuto I usually forward my players to.
  8. no, but what are you afraid of? I mean sure you can do some things if someone obtains your IP address but ask yourself, are you really worth the effort for a hacker to attack you?
  9. I honestly wouldn't recommend a duo core CPU to run a server. I'm not that familiar with tekkit's CPU loads but in general that's not going to be enough. But seeing you're Dutch, check out www.alternate.nl it's a cheapish on-line store. They sell pre-built, and components as well and I have had good experiences with their service too.
  10. Was actually hoping to get a bit more out of this, now I need to find another internet nutcase to keep me entertained =(
  11. Attempt to recreate the issue to get fresh logs, and I would recommend you to request a mod to move your topic to the correct sub-forum.
  12. I'm sorry if I came across too hostile my people skills aren't very good :)
  13. He already noted that he had in the past hosted locally from his house, without any lag complaints. Plus he also posted his bandwidth. If this is indeed true, and I have no reason to believe that it's not, you argument appears to be redundant.
  14. I'm sad to say "she's one of those people," there are people who feel so very entitled they are willing to lay their own law upon those around them. People like her react insulted, and often disproportionally when they can't get it their way. I meant the example I gave her in the response to her video, "A waste of genetic material, that if propagated would damage human potential for years." I imagine that in her eyes she's on a crusade to defend her sense of decency against a group of "internet bullies." Whilst from our perspective she's merely digging her own hole, and doing so in a somewhat amusing if forgettable manner.
  15. Tried a bacon factory? I am personally building a turtle brothel right now but I need to learn LUA before I can finish it =( Or give railcraft a go and build a transport network between all the places you have built.
  16. I'm sure people would like to help you, but to do so we'd need more info. Could you post the logs for us so we can see what went wrong?
  17. That's true, but that can be said for anything. Choosing water over air to me is an easy pick because I pipe my own systems, and I trust my own work. I have heard good things about the closed circuit ones I mentioned earlier, but I can't give you any guarantees in the end.
  18. Youtube videos can help, but in the end it's you building the thing, not the guy showcasing the components he bought because of his opinion of them. Get a good and sturdy case with a good airflow, and openings for water cooling. If you're unfamiliar with water cooling get pre-made closed circuit CPU coolers these don't require any fiddling. Personally I'm a big fan of the s2011 hexcores from intel, but I have the budget for those. Consider what CPU you want before you get your motherboard. Memory is pretty damned cheap nowadays so no real reason to skimp out. A good PSU is very important, try to get one with detachable cables as they can mess up your airflows. Get two good harddrives with enough drive cache, and turning speed to keep up with the rest of your system, a SSD can be great but expensive too. Mirror the drives in raid, it's inefficient storage wise but if one falls the other can back it up. Other than the expectations you have for your hardware building a server is no different from building a home pc. It only becomes somewhat of a challenge when you're working with really high end kit.
  19. You could build one yourself, it's not that different from a normal pc in the end. It's cheaper as well, but doesn't come with service though.
  20. To fill it up again, world edit is quick, but dirty if you're inexperienced with it.
  21. I reckon you're fine then, but to be sure, wait until someone less sleep deprived tells you you're fine :)
  22. Having hosted a server earlier, did anyone report any lag? With that I mean rubber banding teleporting etc. Some people like to refer to frame rate issues as lag too for some inexplicable reason =(. If the number of people won't go way up from the last server you hosted, and the response times were fine I guess you should be cool. If in doubt host a FPS evening with 30 people and see how that goes.
  23. What's important to ask yourself is, do you have enough expertise to support it yourself if something goes wrong, and do you know how to set up networks properly, and safely? Another thing is cooling, and dust management a system that's running 24/7 is going to build up plenty of heat, and dust so having a good cooling system in place is essential in my opinion.
  24. So yeah I was really bored, and a usual I couldn't sleep. What usually happens is that I look for random stuff to add on my server, or look up even more random and strange stuff on youtube. Today I was given both, a fruitless, and never ending discussion on the internet that would boost my ego status to planetary sizes, and hopes that I can add Mo'Creatures 3.7 to my tekkit server once the bukkit port done with alpha testing. Being an insomniac I haven't slept for 2 days now, and I was looking for some light entertainment. Thank you for giving it to me, and I hope you would welcome me to your community.
