You can run whatever you want. Legal things... You rent the server I doubt you could run your security system as it is probably over your home network but apache, tekkit, and terraria would all be fine.

I have a vps paid for life. Also I have a whitelist server with 15 slots through clanslots. I pay about $17 a month and its worth it because running a pc 24/7 (depending on your power supply) will be more than that.

Don't use hamachi. Don't use tungle. Don't portforward. Rent a vps or dedicated host.
