devdog Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I have full access to a 10 gig server and wanted to use some of it to host a minecraft server because I don't have a good enough computer to run it on, someone please help me
disconsented Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Talk to your hosting provider. But the answer is probably going to be along the lines of: No.
devdog Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 I have full control over the server and the hosting provider doesn't know how
disconsented Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 You are going to need to give us more information. Things like: FTP Telnet/SSH access Etc.
devdog Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 Apache Version: Apache/2.2.17 PHP Version: 5.2.17 MySQL Version: 5.1.58 I also have ftp and ssh access, I have a dns zone editor and something called cron jobs and cron output
VideoBoy Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 You just need need SSH and root access. You might need MySQL for certain plugins, and Cron can be set up for automatic backups. Also, what are the specs of the system? Just because it can host websites doesn't mean it can host a Tekkit server. You need a good CPU and a lot of RAM. You can make a huge server with that kind of bandwidth.
TheJohlin Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 If you have SSH and FTP access all you really need to do is to upload the server files with ftp (or ssh). Then ssh into the the server and run the launch file!
devdog Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 I'm having trouble getting Tekkit.jar on the server, it exceeds the single file limit for uploading
TheJohlin Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I'm having trouble getting Tekkit.jar on the server, it exceeds the single file limit for uploading Is that a limitation from the hosting provider? You could zip it into multiple files and then unzip it on the server!
devdog Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 yeah, I'll try that but first I'm dealing with uploading the ungodly amount of files that run this game
devdog Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 oh, I just realized that my problem is that I don't have java installed on the server, does anyone know how to do that?
devdog Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 arch, which is the same as uname -m outputs x86_64
Jigoku Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 hmm...well, that solves the issue on whether or not it is linux. It is. I was hoping it would tell me the distro it has on it. can you try lsb_release -a?
Jigoku Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Who is the provider, then, I might be able to find out what they normally use for a distro. Unless you know which one it is. when you log on via ssh, does it display a banner with information on it?

devdog Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 if you think you can do it I will give you access to my server
