technic launcher updater has stopped working

Question

Posted

Launcher Version: the latest

Operating System: windows 7

Java Version: java 7 JRE

Antivirus Program: AVG

Description of Problem:

Upon opening launcher the messege "technic launcher updater has stopped working" appears, and then goes away and launcher fails to open. I have deleted the launcher file and tried to reinstall but it wont let me. i even deleted java and reinstalled and nothing has changed. I've seen this very question asked several times and have yet to see a valid answer/solution. It seems most questions are followed up with others claiming the same issue and yet no one actually answered the question. I had performed %appdata% and opened the launcher via this method but this too eventually failed and ended in white screen. Please only reply IF you have a solution, NOT simply stating you have the same problem, the questions never get answered when this happens. Thanks.

Also, i have the AVG turned off during this process.

I cannot be bothered to argue with you

Yet your entire post is an argument.

And lets be honest here, you're still hoping that someone will magically produce a solution for your problem without any new information. Otherwise, you wouldn't still be posting argumentative posts on our forums, since you previously stated you

don't even play this modpack any more

You gave up on trying to get this to work. You didn't try being nice to the help, you got mad, so we stopped helping you.If you're going to give up, commit to giving up and stop coming back to yell at us.

Likewise, if you want to try to get it to work, and actually try, commit to that too-ask nicely, be polite, don't attack people for trying to correct you.

Fact is, if someone asks for help and their help request isn't perfect, then they don't get help. Then they get frustrated, which is exactly what you and jorcer want, because you are specifically here to "mess with idiots" as it says on jorcers profile. Do you really think you are making the devs and mods job easy by antagonising everyone that asks for help?

I really don't know if its an American thing, but you guys really are very argumentative, even if I am in the wrong, most people wouldn't bother getting into it like this with some random person for no reason. It seems obvious that you cannot resist replying to every comment I make.

And for the record, Jorcer did make one helpful post, but you, Ash, have added nothing constructive whatsoever, so I don't know where this "we" business is coming from. And of course I'm still hoping for a new solution, as it is a good modpack (gameplay wise), and more importantly there are almost 10 other people hoping I get this fixed so we don't lose our world.

Now will you please just leave it and stop fuming about something that happened days ago, and leave it. And whats more, I beg of you, please, if someone makes a help request, only post in their thread if you can help them, and stop arguing with every person on these forums.

Angry words and whining

A help request doesn't have to be "perfect", it just has to follow the rules for how to properly submit a bug report/help request. Yes, a lot of people here do mess with idiots, because we know you'll react the you are acting. We're only unhelpful to people who can't be bothered to read/follow the rules. And if they start complaining, we treat them like idiots (which they are) and try to either teach them to not be an idiot, or get rid of them. This forum is not tolerant of idiots who don't read the rules. It says at the top of the forum homepage "These are the rules, Read them or Get Bent. Whichever." They chose to get bent. As for wether it's an "American Thing", a lot of people on these forums are not American. Jorcer is a Canadian, which you would know if you had actually bothered to read any part of his profile other than the "messing with idiots" part. As for "leaving it" and "only post in their thread if you can help them", what makes you think you have the right to tell anyone on this forum to do anything?

Wow, seriously why do you have to argue? I mean, I have a pink baby next to my name, so I have an excuse, but you guys are just constantly lowering yourselves to the "idiots" level. Ash and Jorcer have already proven many times that their help just isn't helpful. First they say reinstall, then turn off avg and stop using ie, then when someone suggests the fault may be at the devs end, they get angry and start arguing. I meant North American, and I'n not telling I'm asking. But why does it annoy you that much?

I have a pink baby next to my name, so I have an excuse,

Some people actually get unkellered by not being asses, but you seem to be okay using your kellering as an excuse to be a complete jerk.

We suggest the same things over and over again, yes, you are correct. But as proven by the amount of kellers, people don't read the rules, which can be equated to, they do not read the common problems and solutions thread. Which, if I want to stretch this branch out further: they don't know basic troubleshooting.

If my help isn't helpful, why do people pm thanks, post on my page, or thank me in their thread, hmmm?

Stop being a jerk.

.

So what youre saying is, if their problem can't be resolved, it must be something they've done wrong. Thats the point where you start getting abuse, because it is very frustrating to have someone deny there could be a problem at the producers end, and put it all down to user stupidity. All arguing aside, take my problem for example: When I was trying to remove specific mods to see if they were the cause, people wouldn't tell me how because that couldn't possibly be the cause.

Do you see how people might get annoyed at you for the way you reply to some threads? Or do you not realise? Think about it from the other guys point of view, they want to play this cool game, it doesn't work so they come here for help, its their first time at the forums (and these forums arent the easiest to navigate) so they make some mistakes making their report, and they don't get any help, just "don't double post" or "i would answer this if you used correct grammar". Thats very annoying, as this is the only place to get support for Tekkit.

It's not your fault, it seems obvious to me that you are forgiven for arguing with Helen Kellers because you do 90% of the mods work, which makes the forums look bad because (I'm sorry but) you're not very good at it.

When I was trying to remove specific mods to see if they were the cause, people wouldn't tell me how because that couldn't possibly be the cause.

At this point, you may as well uninstall the launcher entirely and individually add each and every mod you want. We are not going to tell you how to change the launcher, it's here to make your life easier, sorry it's not working for you.

its their first time at the forums

They should read the rules regarding these forums prior to making a post. You aren't going to try to use the computer before turning it on first now are you?

which makes the forums look bad because (I'm sorry but) you're not very good at it.

I do not care what you think I am doing. Nor do I care that you seem to think that the mods here don't do their jobs. It's volunteer, they don't have to, but they do because they are dedicated to something they care about.

So what youre saying is, if their problem can't be resolved, it must be something they've done wrong.

If people can't be bothered to read the rules, look at threads that are stickied to make their lives easier, or use the search function to try to find a usable solution for their problem, then I cannot be bothered to provide them the help they came here for. "If the instructions below are not clear enough for you to understand, please use Google to assist yourself. We can not babysit you, and

the solutions below assume you have a basic understanding of the computer you're using. If not, ask for help from someone who does, or your parents, or your friends, etc."

From the very beginning of the CP&S. If you can't even attempt to help yourself first, of course we won't attempt to help you.

@Ashzification

How long do you think it will be before the mods ban this guy?

I hope he doesn't get banned, I hope he learns a lesson.

I can link you dozens of separate posts where either me or the bride have successfully solved someones problem (most of the time, by telling them to reinstall, turn of AV's, etc.)

Thats my point, at the point I made a bug report, I had already tried all the solutions given in threads, using google, and tried a few of my own theories. Then I was told I hadn't proven I'd done any work so I didn't deserve help (all because I posted in the wrong section) At that time, I didn't even know Technic and Tekkit were different things! So you guys had already assumed I was being lazy before any of this.

And I have learned a lesson, never argue with an American, because no matter what, they will NEVER let it go.

Just FYI, while the bride may be from America, I am not and yet I find your generalization of Americans unneeded and petty. You are lazy because it takes two seconds to learn about the pack and to figure out that Technic and Tekkit are different things. I have just one question, why do you keep posting here if we are so infuriating? You have already stated that you are done with the modpack so I see no reason for you to stay unless you are a masochist...

Let's get one thing straight: you called yourself stupid, and you said you didn't deserve help.

You posted in the wrong section, which told us you didn't read the stickies. Therefore, no matter ho much you claim to have read the stickies, we won't believe you, because you blatantly disregarded one of them by posting in the wrong section. So, we were all founded in our assumptions that you were lazy, since you did not do what you should have. Which you would have known, if you had read the information in front of you.

Just FYI, while the bride may be from America, I am not and yet I find your generalization of Americans unneeded and petty.

If only he would have said "never argue with a woman" I would have been satisfied with that.

You are from the continent called North America, that makes you an American, as much as you'd like to deny that fact.

You are lazy because it takes two seconds to learn about the pack and to figure out that Technic and Tekkit are different things.

How can I figure out they're 2 different things when I didn't even know that was something I needed to figure out?

I have just one question, why do you keep posting here if we are so infuriating? You have already stated that you are done with the modpack so I see no reason for you to stay unless you are a masochist...

I've nothing else to do while I'm waiting for some things. BTW I really think we should stop posting on this poor guys thread, his heart will sink when he sees all these posts and no solutions.

Ash, the post where I called my self stupid (ironically) is a response to the mods post, where he said stupid behaviour is rewarded with no help or something like that.

Even if I didn't read the stickies, do you really think its the correct attitude in a support forum to just blank them or start messing with them because you think they're idiots?

Oh, and Jorcer is not a woman, so that theory doesn't work, also the women in my life are lovely people.

You must have missed this:

GOOD NEWS GOOD NEWS!!!!!! jORCER, YOU DA MAN BRO! ok, just so everyone that has the same issue's that i had, this is what i did to fix it.

1.downloaded firefox

2. deleted all tekkit / technic files

3. goto tekkit, do not click on the box that says "windows" to download launcher, click on Linux/jar

4. simply double click the technic launcher and you're back in action!

You will lose your texture packs and mods if you have any if you delete all files , as i did, but as with any corrupt file, its best to delete it and start over from scratch. Hope this helps!!

OK but thats not a solution to not being able to run the .exe or erm.. not sure why you posted that actually is it even meant for me?

It is a solution. Instead of using the .exe, just use the .jar instead. We don't know how to fix your .exe, but we do know an alternative to using the .exe.

You are from the continent called North America, that makes you an American, as much as you'd like to deny that fact.

Actually American, while its original meaning was to identify with the continent, has now developed the connotation of being a citizen of the United States of America. I am not American, I am Canadian. I have nothing against Americans (as you seem to) In fact I live less than an hour away from the border and love visiting and seeing my friends in America. If you had said North American, I would agree, I am a resident of the aforementioned continent.

How can I figure out they're 2 different things when I didn't even know that was something I needed to figure out?

Because you are expected to have the general wherewithal to understand that if there is a section for Tekkit and a section for Technic, there is likely a difference. Also, if you had searched around for common issues to see if there was a solution you would have noticed the distinction being made. Even if you did not understand that, when we asked you to post in the correct section you should have realised that.

I've nothing else to do while I'm waiting for some things.

So I was right you are a masochist.

BTW I really think we should stop posting on this poor guys thread, his heart will sink when he sees all these posts and no solutions.

See the brides post for proof that there has been a solution. This guy posted a bug report with plenty of info regarding what he had already tried, a nice description of the problem, etc. and then I was able to solve his problem. I have seen him around the forums and he seems to be enjoying himself. You on the other hand can't let it go and continue to post on random bug reports whining about the "service" here.

Even if I didn't read the stickies, do you really think its the correct attitude in a support forum to just blank them or start messing with them because you think they're idiots?

In a word, yes. If you are too lazy to read the stickys, it is very likely that you will simply be wasting our time. They are there for a reason.

Oh, and Jorcer is not a woman, so that theory doesn't work, also the women in my life are lovely people.

I am sure your mother is a wonderful person we never commented on the women in your life. The bride was making a joke.

There is one thing I can agree on with you, I am definitely not a woman.

Does this mean the original problem is definitely at Tekkits side? Did they update recently?

I don't know. The .exe works fine for people with a 64 bit operating system and 64 bit java, but for people with 32 bit operating systems and java, the .exe does not work sometimes. The fact that it works for some 32 bit users and not others points to it not being an issue on Tekkit's side, and makes me believe it is most likely a problem on the user's side. The difficulty in pinpointing the issue is that we can't find the common denominator as the bug reports we get (even the ones that are properly filled out) don't give us enough information. It is very likely that we have the information, but we can't see it in the giant pile of bug reports we get. One of these days I'm gonna try to track down the common denominator of the people with the 32 bit .exe issue.

Pretty sure the common denominator is that they all have 32bit systems... ;)

Well yes, but since some people with 32 bit OS on't have this problem, there has to be something else.

It is an interesting problem. Especially because all the exe does is execute the jar file.
