I'm in the process of building a new base on a new map out of boredom. The one thing I decided to do this time around though is build and live entirely in the air. Yes, there will be some initial work on the ground, but sanctuary is still the sky and once I have quarries etc...no more groundwork.

The topic of question though is how you go about building your bases? I have some things I always do and its a matter of placement etc for ease of use and decor. Like a rubber tree farm, sorting warehouse, wood farm...etc

And then of course there is the question of artistic design. What do you think would make a good "theme" to try and follow for a sky base? I did one map once where all my functions were on circle platforms covered in glass domes and had 5x walkways between "pods". I'm never happy usually with the underside appearance of my sky constructions.

Anyway, rambling on here hoping for some better conversation in here this week :)

For air-based bases I always build a layer of dirt completely flat under whatever "ground level" it is I'm building. Reason is that without being able to fly the only way to place blocks on the underside of the airborne "ground level" is by having other blocks already exist under you (or by placing enough sand/gravel to build up a post from which you can build off of). However, if you want to build a "space elevator" type of thing with railcraft then the blocks you use to make the elevator you can use to build downwards from the "ground level".

As for themes, "hanging gardens" is always pretty but very common. Could build it over a RedPower volcano and have the focal point be a pillar of lava that streams from the center of the airborne base down to the top of the volcano. Could have a "mirrored" design where your base on the topside of the "ground level" is reflected on the underside of the "ground level" (at least from the outside). Could make a giant statue on the the underside of your base standing on the true ground with giant hands that hold up the "ground level"... except have your "ground level" float above the hands. Just crazy ideas for you.

I like the volcano idea...funny how the map I started to build on had no volcano for a change anywhere in sight :)

I think its the "flat" look of their undersides that always bothers me.

I got an idea: why not make an alien tentaclemonster thingy? I mean, the bottom would look awesome (given you use pipes to make the tentacles transporting stuff up etc. I'll make it myself actually, I will upload a pic if I like it :) )

Edit: I haven't got much time sadly... I'm working on it. Also I just saw that I'm not allowed to post anymore :(

ooh ooh, recreate Rata Sum from Guild Wars 2. It's a giant floating cube rotated so theres a corner going straight down, and the corner that faces straight up has been torn off and floats as a smaller cube up above it. The area inside where the corner was torn off on top of the big cube is where the city is located.

It would be hard to build a cube on it's side in minecraft. Maybe you could do it with microblocks.

so, i made some more progress today expanding out my base layer. it surprises me though how little action threads on general MC talk die out and the keller threads get all the attention :)

Yes! I'm allowed to post here again :)

I'm working on it, I've got some free time now. So I'll be able to post a pic of it, I think, in 2-3 days :)
