Launcher has error immediately on startup

Question

Posted

Launcher Version: 3.1.2

Operating System: Windows 7

Java Version: 7

Antivirus Program: Microsoft Security Essentials

Description of Problem:

I double click TechnicLauncher.exe on my desktop. It opens a window titled "Error starting launcher." It then says Cannot load: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\logs. I click ok on this window, then it says:

Requested registry access is not allowed.

at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.OpenSubKey(String name, Boolean Writable)

at TechnicLauncher.Program.GetJavaFileAssociationPath()

at TechnicLauncher.Program.LogBasicSystemInfo(TextWriter log)

at TechnicLauncher.Prrogram.Main()

At the directory C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming it creates the .techniclauncher folder, but places nothing inside of it. Not even the .jar file that it's supposed to, from what I've seen. I've tried reinstalling the launcher several times, but that fixes nothing. I've also attempted running it with administrative privileges and reinstalled java 7 twice.

Error Messages:

Cannot load: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\logs

Requested registry access is not allowed.

at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.OpenSubKey(String name, Boolean Writable)

at TechnicLauncher.Program.GetJavaFileAssociationPath()

at TechnicLauncher.Program.LogBasicSystemInfo(TextWriter log)

at TechnicLauncher.Prrogram.Main()

Error Log:

logs folder is not created, this seems to be a large part of the problem.

Well, the best I can tell you is do a clean reinstall.

After you've deleted/uninstalled everything, restart your computer. One of the mods here (Torezu I think) said it makes sure all of the files are completely deleted. I know MSE isn't known for issues with the pack, but turn it off and turn off all firewalls too.

Although it seems you've done that, I don't see what it could hurt to try again.

OK, so you have tried to run it as an administrator. Have you tried to run it from the actual administration account instead of just "as an admin?"

It's definitely looking like it's having errors writing to the registry, as Torezu said, but I'm not sure what to do about it. And yes, I'm on the administrator account. I'm the only one who uses this computer.

Sorry my suggestion didn't help. It's pretty late for me, but I'll see if I can find something useful in the morning. The only thing I can think of right now is a corrupted registry. The only way I know to completely fix it is a full reinstall of the system.
