Nether fortresses

Does this mod pack either remove or make nether fortresses much rarer?

I know they are meant to be hard to find but I have never had too much difficulty in the past. However, with this mod I cannot find one despite loading up several worlds and searching them all. I have even tried using a program that tells you the coordinates of a nearby nether fortress but all I found was a series of tunnels.

Any advice?

I do not believe so. We have 2 fortresses very close to our spawn nether portal.

The nether portal I created is a great distance from the initial spawn, could this have something to do with my issue?

No, I've had both issues myself, 1 game where a fort was literally directly under my portal. The other game I could not find a Nether Fort even searching 600 meters away in ll directions. You could always just use mystcraft to try making a nether fortress age. Not as realistic, but works if you can find the symbol for it, or get lucky with a random age.
