Is there a way I can make the accepted string length longer or is this something out of my control?

There is a development build for 1.2.5, and if your players have "use latest development builds" selected, they will be on the completely wrong version of minecraft. You will need to tell them to open the launcher and hit the options button, from there select use recommended build.
