nzelnick Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 I've been playing AotBT for awhile and it's chock full of delicious fun...but I can't get nether portals to ignite. I have tried: building normal portals (fail) building enhanced portals (by cheating. fail) resetting the mod pack (fail) starting a new world just to get a working nether portal (fail) deleting every version of meta.inf in any related .jar I can find (fail) pulling my hair out (ow. fail) So far? Luck is not mine. Is it AotBT? Is it something to do with MC 1.6.4 I am overlooking? Where should I be looking to find the solution to this problem? Any ideas/help/solutions/guidance/emotional support is appreciated. thx. NZ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
The_Supa_Dupa Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Are you sure you built the correct shape of a portal? and btw there are 2 kinds of flint and steel are you sure you used the right one? (normal one for normal portals) Because maybe you built it wrong or used the wrong tool idk. and i think that chiseled obsidian doesnt work with portals.(it might not be right) Thats all i got in mind. Maybe try the steps again (that you wrote in your post, even the "putting my hair off"! might work like magic) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
nzelnick Posted May 20, 2014 Author Share Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) For the first, non-enhanced portal I built (horizontal x vertical): 5x5 5x6 6x5 4x5 and then I tried those and other configurations using the portal modifier and controller blocks. I tried both flint & steel variations on all types. Sigh. As to Obsidian type, the Chisel mod replaces vanilla MC Block 49 with its own variant obsidian--does that mean that obsidian won't work? I don't think that can be right. I'm going to try some other portal shape variations. I'll probably leave what little hair I have alone, though. Thanks for the suggestions. Loader Posted May 21, 2014 Share Posted May 21, 2014 This shape isn't working with a normal flint and steel? It still should with most types of obsidian (not sure about snakebody/snakehead as they're a little special I'd have to test, but the rest should be fine). ██ = Obsidian Block ░░ = Air ▓▓ = The Ground <- - 4B- -> ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ██ ██ ██ ██ ░░ ^ ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ | ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ 5B ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ | ░░ ██ ██ ██ ██ ░░ v ▓▓ ▓▓ ▓▓ ▓▓ ▓▓ ▓▓ If you're using an enhanced portal then any shape is fine but it's not for visiting places for the first time - you need dimensional upgrades on every portal and a network set the same on both ends (so you need the other end to exist first) before you can make them, and you need a special flint and steel (its the yellowish version). Do you have a picture? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
nzelnick Posted May 21, 2014 Author Share Posted May 21, 2014 Doh! That worked. I had been making the portal too big, apparently, and had been building it on a "stand". I started MC in 1.7x, which is more forgiving when it comes to Nether Portal design, I guess. Here's what screwed me up, I think: O=Obsidian S=Stone G=Ground OOOOO O O O O O O OOOOO SSS GGGGGGGGGG Thanks! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Loader Posted May 21, 2014 Share Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) Ha, yeah - it's been modified to be a lot more tolerant of shape now, so that'll be it. There is a little leeway and you can have it on a stand, the only blocks that are actually important are these obsidian blocks, I just wanted to make sure you had the shape right first; ██ = Obsidian Block ░░ = Air ▓▓ = The Ground (not featured in this diagram) <- - 4B- -> ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ██ ██ ░░ ░░ ^ ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ | ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ 5B ░░ ██ ░░ ░░ ██ ░░ | ░░ ░░ ██ ██ ░░ ░░ v ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ ░░ Glad you got it sorted Edited May 21, 2014 by Loader Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Kalbintion Posted May 21, 2014 Share Posted May 21, 2014 Vanilla portal shapes werent changeable in 1.6, and has to be the size prior to the change (4x5 as loaders diagram shows) and only enhanced portals permit different sized portals to be a thing.
