I used this tutorial to make a modpack with a few of my favorite mods but I am having trouble making it work. There are really only two problems. The first is that there is no sound in the game and it is completely vanilla, none of the mods are running. Here is the url for my modpackhttp://www.technicpack.net/api/modpack/supetor-1. Let me know what you think and if there is a way to fix this. Possibly I don't have the right coremods, or they are in the wrong location. Another possibility is that I am using mods from different minecraft versions, but I think they are all 1.7.2

  • Your Forge version is outdated. The latest Forge for 1.7.2 is #1147.
  • As of Forge/MC 1.6.4 the coremods folder is not used in any way and should not be included in your modpack.
  • You have a mixture of mods for 1.7.2 and 1.7.10. This is "bad". All of the mods you have included have 1.7.10 versions so you really should just switch your pack to 1.7.10 and get all the mods for that version.
  • Always include a full compliment of config files with your modpack. No exceptions.

Ok I think I understand everything you said there except about config files. What are config files and where do I get them? As I mentioned in another thread most of my mods are from hermitcraft.com/modsauce but there weren't any config files that I noticed that came with them, or maybe (probably) I'm just a newb and didn't realize I was supposed to download them also.

I maintain a modpack called BareBonesPack which can be used to build and test a pack locally before building your modpack archive. The explanation on how to use it goes into some detail about configs:

I added BareBonesPack and ran it and got this error report.

    Exception: NullPointerException

Part of the process for using the BareBonesPack is opening the settings for the pack and selecting the specific version of Forge/MC you want to use. (as is clearly stated in the guide I linked)

If this doesn't solve the problem then you have something else messed up.

I didnt understand about choosing a version to use. In the launcher it says builds (which I couldnt figure out) but I put it on one that started with 1.7.10..... (with more stuff after it) instead of leaving it on recommended and it downloaded stuff for a while, then closed the launcher as if it were about to launch a game, then it brought the launcher back. I think this might be how it is supposed to be since its not an actual modpack but a tool for formatting them but I'm not sure.

As to your earlier comment about forge, I googled forge mod and came up with this website http://files.minecraftforge.net/ and did ctrl+f to find where it said 1147 (the second one) However now my problem is I don't know which of the links to click on. The links listed are:  (Changelog) (Installer* (Installer-Win* (Javadoc* (Src* (Universal* (Userdev* I have no idea which one to click on. When I did this before I chose installer but I wanted to check this time to see if it is right.

You also mentioned that I had some of the wrong versions of mods and they should all be 1.7.10 but on the ComputerCraft website it says the latest one is for 1.6.4.

So if I am understanding this all correctly, I now need to use the 1.6.4 versions of all the mods or not include computercraft. From there I need to start adding the mods one by one into the mods folder in barebones to make sure they all work. When / if they work I can copy everything into another folder, zip it up, add it to the Technic site, and then add and play it through the technic launcher.

If I use the 1.6.4 versions of the mods instead of 1.7.10 will I need to download the 1.6.4 barebones?

  • You should be downloading the Installer (Installer or Installer-Win) so that you can install it to your SERVER folder. This process will place the server JAR and a folder with the required libraries in your SERVER folder.
  • There is a beta version of ComputerCraft available for 1.7.10 in their forums.
  • The "builds" listed in the settings for BareBonesPack are the different MC and Forge versions available. For instance, you can select 1.7.10_10.13.0.1197 or 1.7.2_10.12.2.1147 (there are more options available). On the left is the MC version. On the right is the Forge version. Once you select one of the builds, click Save and then PLAY it will launch the client successfully and you should see the main client window. It will report that there are 3 mods installed.

Last night before you responded that there was a 1.7.10 version of computercraft I loaded the 1.6.4 barebones with computercraft. It ran well enough, except there wasn't any sound.

This morning I read your comment and deleted barebones and then redownloaded it to the launcher. From there I added the 1.7.10 version of computercraft and ran barebones. It showed a message in the gray loading box saying Download failed, retries remaining. I thought this might just be because computercraft is in beta so I used some other 1.7.10 mods after I removed computercraft from the mods folder. They all came back with the same problem.

I attempted to use NEI a minute ago but forgot to include CodeChickenCore with it so i downloaded that and put it in the mods folder. At first it said the same download failed retries remaining, but a minute later a window opened that said something like Preparing your minecraft environment. I thought this meant it would work but then the window closed and the technic launcher opened again.

I'm not sure if this is significant but I looked in the mods folder and there was a new folder titled 1.7.10 with a file inside called CodeChickenLib-1.7.10-1.1.1.93-universal

Also there was a codechickencore and Tconpreloader file inside config.

  • As of Forge/MC 1.6.4 the coremods folder is not used in any way and should not be included in your modpack.
  • You are still putting mods in the coremods folder. If you aren't going to follow my advice it doesn't make a lot of sense to continue providing it.
  • As is clearly stated where you download the mod, Computercraft 1.64pr3 is for Forge/MC 1.7.2 and 1.64pr4 is for Forge/MC 1.7.2. 1.63 is for Forge/MC 1.6.4.
  • You STILL have a mishmash of mods for different versions of Forge/MC. As your pack currenlty stands you have mods for 1.6.4, 1.7.2 and 1.7.10. THIS WILL NOT WORK. If you are making a 1.7.10 pack you need to be using mods which are all specifically for 1.7.10. Some mods work for both 1.7.2 and 1.7.10 but in those cases the author will clearly state that.
  • Your modpack settings have your pack set to 1.7.2. Are you making a 1.7.2 pack or a 1.7.10 pack? You need to make a decision and make sure everything is set and configured for the same version.

Read through this post, then fix your issues:

I didn't use the coremods folder. It was already included when barebones downloaded so I just ignored it. should I delete it as well?

I put the core mods like mantle and codechickencore into the regular mods folder, is that where they go, or do I not need core mods at all with technic?

I thought I had the right versions of the mods and fore but I will go back and double check.

Also I haven't been updating the modpack I originally created and linked to at the beginning of this thread so if that is where you are seeing that I have mishmashed mods that's why. I have still just been using barebones but haven't copied them into another pack because they haven't worked yet.

It's awfully hard for me to troubleshoot something I can't see. When you have the download URL updated in your pack settings with an updated pack I can provide additional assistance.

  • The contents of your pack are in a subfolder inside the archive. All of the required folders (bin, config, mods) must be at the top level of the folder structure inside the modpack archive.
  • You have included too much stuff in your archive. The fourth bullet point on using the BareBonesPack is quite explicit on how to package your archive once it is working correctly. Go back and read that. Recreate your modpack archive.

When I provide a guide or a how-to it is vitally important that the instructions be followed completely and in order. When making a cake you can't just decide to leave out ingredients or the results you pull out of the oven will be inedible. Making a pack is the same way.

Come back if you still have problems.

I created a modpack here http://www.technicpack.net/api/modpack/supetor I really thought it would work this time but when I ran it I still got the download failed, retries remaining. Then it attempted to launch before returning to the technic launcher. I went through this entire thread and re-read all of the fixes you gave me but I'm pretty sure everything is correct according to those. It's probably something super simple that I missed. lol

The post on getting mods which was previously provided:

Nowhere in that post does it say you should rename the mods you download. Additionally, it clearly states that you should only get mods from the mod author's preferred distribution channels. The mod you have included named "Not-Enough-Items-1.7.10.jar" is not the name of the file which you would have gotten from the mod author. It should be named "NotEnoughItems-1.7.10-1.0.3.48-universal.jar". Notice that the file name has the actual mod version number included. This is vital information for debugging and maintaining a pack. The same goes for "CodeChickenCore-1.7.10.jar" which should be named "CodeChickenCore-1.7.10-1.0.3.23-universal.jar".

I'm not trying to pick on you. I don't know of any other way to encourage attention to detail than to point out the specific things which you overlooked and how they should be different.

Fix these issues and come back if you are still having troubles.

Don't worry, I don't take it as being picked on. I'm very grateful for all the help you have given me, especially as long as this project has turned out to be.

Do I need to download forge and put it in the mods folder or is that included with barebones somewhere else?

Posted

I reset barebones and just put CodeChickenCore and NEI in it and attempted to run it but it didn't work. I tried putting forge in but it didn't work either. Is it supposed to run when I use barebones or just return to the launcher? Here is where I got the Chicken stuff ChickenBones Mods - Minecraft Mods - Mapping and Modding - Minecraft Forum - Minecraft Forum (I clicked downloads, then the latest universal) and this is where I got forge Minecraft Forge Downloads (I clicked 1.7.10 recommended installer)

Since it isn't working in the barebonespack I decided it would just put it in dropbox and not go through the process of making it a modpack on the technic site. Here it is. Now you can also see the logs which might be more helpful. Some of the folders that were empty were removed when I zipped it.

  • BareBonesPack (BBP) works fine right out of the box if  you select a "version" in the pack settings. However, if you have previously used it for anything (even other versions of Forge) you MUST remove all the extra folders before trying to start it (when you are trying to "start over"). I have a script that deletes everything but these folders: bin, cache, lib, resourcepacks, texturepacks. That basically "resets" the pack to the default for the version you have selected.
  • You don't have to add Forge to BBP. Forge is the only thing in it by default. The file binmodpack.jar is the Forge mod for the pack and should not need to be messed with or altered in any way in normal operations.
  • Optifine for Forge/MC 1.6+ goes in like any other mod. However, it has very poor support for everything after Forge/MC 1.6. It crashes every pack I've ever worked with on Forge/MC 1.7+ when there are more than just a handful of mods present.
  • You found the exact right locations to get both Forge and ChickenBones' mods. :)

Any time it "goes back to the launcher" you are seeing a crash. The latest crash-report should have lots of useful information. Feel free to put that in a pastebin and link it here or put it inside a spoiler tag in a post here.

I don't know what to tell you. No matter what I do to the BBP, as long as I remove the folders I listed above (bin, cache, lib, resourcepacks, texturepacks) it starts up exactly as it should. Also, the links you have provided so far have no crash reports in them.
