JD1611 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 (edited) I would imagine that his has been posted before but given that it's possible my situation is somehow a bit different I've decided to start a thread for it. Firstly I will say that when this was just simply Tekkit I never had any problems running it on my computer which is the first thing I'm finding confusing. The problem I am having is that when I try to play Tekkit Classic I experience very low (5/6) fps. This makes the game pretty much unplayable and occurs even on a completely brand new world. I am using practically the minimal settings in terms of render distance, textures etc and still I cannot get it to run smoothly. I have changed the allocation of RAM a few times and in my latest attempt I allocated 6GB which is probably more than would be recommended for my computer anyway but in this test i noticed something which I found strange. After loading a brand new world and going into F3 overlay to check the fps I also noticed the memory on the right hand side of the screen which showed some confusing data. What I saw was: Used Memory: 1% (80mb) of 6127MB Allocated Memory: 2% (127MB) Does anyone understand why it is using so little memory, or is that supposed to be the case and it should still run smoothly? Any help would be much appreciated. (I am aware that I spelt issue wrong in the title of this topic) Edited August 17, 2014 by JD1611
JD1611 Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 After giving up on this I decide to come back and of course still exactly the same as when I made the OP. In answer to Hugs' question the graphics card I have is not the best, it's ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB I'm guessing this is going to be the main source of the problem but if so that doesn't explain why I used to be able to run Tekkit and indeed single player Technic which had even more mods at a reasonable FPS.
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted March 2, 2015 Discord Moderator Posted March 2, 2015 Ensure that you are using the latest Java 8 64bit for your platform. Also, double check the Launcher settings to verify that it has found and is using the correct version of Java. Never allocate more than 4G or half your physical RAM in the Launcher, whichever is smaller. The client reporting that it is only using 80G isn't completely off base. After GC (Garbage Collection) events mine does the same, at least when shortly after starting a SSP world. Are you sure that (for whatever reason) there aren't extra Java parameters being supplied by system settings? You can open a command prompt and type "set" (without quotes) to get a complete list of the current environment variables. Feel free to use a pastebin service to link those here if you have questions. If you bring up the Task Manager (after addressing allocation and Java settings from the first couple bullet points) while running the client, how much memory is being reported as used/free? How does your CPU load look?

Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted March 2, 2015 Discord Moderator Posted March 2, 2015 Hmm, yeah, using a Mac changes where you would collect that info. Go to the "Launcher Options" inside the launcher and look at the "JAVA SETTINGS" tab. Verify your Java version and memory allocation there. The rest of the information should be available with a couple Google searches (I don't use a Mac).
JD1611 Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Java Settings: Version: 1.8.0_25 64-Bit (Default) Memory Allocated: 2GB I have always noticed that everything else my computer does when running any mod pack is laggy, especially web browsing. I have looked at the Mac Utility called Activity Monitor and that has given me some data that may be useful. Tekkit Classic is using on average 25% of the CPU, 760MB of memory and it also says that of the 8GB of physical memory about 6.75GB is being used which seems like a lot to me, is this anything to go on?
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted March 2, 2015 Discord Moderator Posted March 2, 2015 If you have a ton of other stuff running and then launch a modded MC pack with 2G allocated it is quite possible that you are running out of RAM in the overall system. Try launching Tekkit Classic with 1G allocated in the Launcher.
JD1611 Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 I don't have a ton of other stuff running, just that if I ever do have anything else open like a web browser that runs significantly slower in fact it's noticeable even when Vanilla MC is running. I have allocated 1GB to the launcher and it's made no difference, running at about 5 FPS.
