AFAIK, the only time you need to be connected to the web (other than SMP) is when you first log on. You shouldn't need to disable your firewall because nothing should be attempting to communicate over the web after the initial log in.

Why did you change the extension to .zip? Don't do that. Just download the .jar file and use it. You only need to rename it if the extension is something other than .jar.

This sounds like a bug for the Tekkit section but I can't really tell. Do you get past the Launcher screen and into the Main Menu of Minecraft?

I am getting a “Technic Launcher has Stopped Working Error”! If your launcher is encountering this error, a solution is to download the .jar file from http://www.technicpack.net/download/ (pick the third from the left (Linux/Jar)). If you are using Internet Explorer you will also need to change the file extension (the ending of the file) to .jar instead of .zip. Once you’ve done that, all you need to do is double-click on the file to run the launcher. I have seen probably about 100 of these posts and have yet to find a common denominator. Most don't have AVG. I think bride and Greenwolf made a spreadsheet to try and find similarities but didn't come up with anything

Run the jar with Java by right clicking and selecting "Run with..." "Java"

Yes because by making your own bug report you are forced to include information that is helpful to solving your problem. In addition it ensures the the OP who posted the report gets the help they need that is tailored to them. If those two reasons aren't enough, it is in the rules so go do it.
