Technic launcher obscenely slow to launch

Question

Posted

Launcher Version: 1.0.1.3

Operating System: Windows 7 64 bit

Java Version: 7 update 5

Antivirus Program: The technic launcher is taking an extreme amount of time to load. The banner displays for quite a few minutes, then the login screen will appear with the login prompt grayed out. After another long amount of time, it will allow me to log in like normal. This takes about 10-15 minutes to complete at least.

General troubleshooting procedures (Delete, redownload, reboot, delete, redownload, reinstall java) etc have been observed to no effect.

My little brother just walked by and saw me sitting staring at the launcher screen. He informed he his Technic launcher is misbehaving as well. My geek intuition is pointing toward my Linux gateway. Should I whitelist any Technic IP addresses? (Also, is there any way I could be in a blacklist?)

it certainly sounds like a networking issue, so looking at your linux gateway might help. I'm not sure if you'd have to whitelist anything per-se, but something is certainly making those connections VERY slow.

So, it's progressed a bit. I logged in, had to update, updated, it took forever and then some to download and extract the mods. When I went to join my server it told me I was missing requisite mods, so I've done the entire thing again. This time I googled "Technic launcher slow", as it appears to be the launcher in general now rather than network issues.

I ran in to these threads:

http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/very-long-loading-from-start-and-launcher-is-buggy.13520/

http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/technic-launcher-extremely-slow.2580/

No solutions yet but to wait it out for a half hour or so every time I want to play.

(Oh good, it loaded the Minecraft screen. Maybe I have the requisite mods now...nope. Missing IC2 v1.95, ironchest 3.3, tubestuff 48.2.1, compactsolars 2.2, IC2nuclearcontrolv1.1.6, EE 1.4.5.1, and immibiscore48.2.1).

Edit: So, after another long wait I realized I had it set to development builds. It looks like mo'creatures is included in 3.1.0, cool! Anyway, after a long wait it will work. Hopefully this is fixed soon. I'm willing to work with the devs to get it fixed if needed.

do you have it set to use the latest build? if so, that's why you have the mod missing problem.

what's your CPU usage like during these long load times? also, what anti-virus do you have? have you tried disabling it?

it looks like it is taking a long time to do simple operations or small downloads. for instance one of the small images for hack/mine took well over a minute to download. either your bandwidth is super capped or something is meddling with file IO.

if I had to guess, I'd say someone on your network doesn't understand torrent upload limits and why they're a good thing. could be AV messing around though. is this the only internet related thing that is slow? how well does the vanilla launcher work? do web pages load quickly when this is happening?

CPU usage is between 3 and 12% while waiting. My available download bandwidth is around 2 megabytes/second and manually downloading any of the files it lists takes such a miniscule amount of time it's ridiculous. These are my speedtest results,

One thing that is the same for both me and my brother that might be applicable is that we have both upgraded to Samsung 830 series solid state disks in the past few weeks. This should make it lightning fast to load though. He also tested it on a laptop, which is not on an SSD, and it did this as well. This makes me think it's a network issue.

Antivirus is Comodo Internet Security and is disabled entirely including all firewalls+sandboxing.

Is there any way to launch Tekkit directly from a jar?

well, you can launch the launcher from a jar, but I'm not aware of a way to bypass the launcher. I agree it's most likely a network issue if it's affecting multiple PCs in the same way. I guess try the launcher using the jar directly and see if that does anything for you? though even so, I honestly cannot think of a good reason for it to slow down that much. you could try running it as admin as well, I don't think it'll matter but at this point I am grasping at straws.

Yep, am running as an admin, have tried running it with that batch file that tells Java to use IPv4 (I think that's what it does), same result.

I'm wondering if I need to white list Tekkit's servers in my gateway or something. Tomorrow I might spoof my external facing mac address to force my ISP to give me a new IP, to make sure it isn't some odd IP-greylist thing could be Tekkit's fault.

Thanks for trying to help! :)

well, the best way to know if it's your gateway would be to bypass it completely and then see if you have the problem. I don't have any idea what your network setup is like though, so that may or may not be as easy as it sounds.

That's not easily possible and involves fiddling with an old router we keep around as a backup.

However, I woke up in a bad mood and started hitting the "Stop" button on certain services on my gateway, which runs ClearOS, http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html . I tried disabling intrusion detection - didn't fix it. However, when I disabled the content filter (which shouldn't be up anyway, as it was randomly classifying sites like Arstechnica as porn, granted Arstechnica is geek porn but that should be something a Linux router encourages), it started working.

So anyone behind a content filter who is having an issue like this should try disabling the content filter.

Launcher is pure shit, lucky my friends server runs it or I'd install the mods myself with better luck. Ran it on both of my PCs and it took 8 minutes of the technic launcher splash screen loading sign until it started to download the tekkit pack. then minecraft kept crashing, so first time failed. On second computer it launched and crashed, and crashed, and... oh surprise, crashed again. I updated java on both machines to the latest release. Get good at programming or don't program at all. Rules of the world my friend, I don't make them, I just follow them. You don't see me giving out things I know don't work.

Cool story

bro.

You'll need to post your own thread with your log files attached and link it to me in this one if you want my help troubleshooting. :D

Bro.

Not a meme. Please dear lady Jay?, or even lord Kakermix, not a meme! Have mercy on my tortured soul, what have I done to be subjected to so many memes in a single night?

Get good at programming or don't program at all.

...What? I'm still looking for a reason the Technic Pack team is obligated to do anything for any of us. Especially considering it's a free pack that you must have willingly downloaded. The team doesn't make us pay for it, they don't profit from it. We don't deserve it, we're not entitled to it. If I stop liking the pack, I'll use a version I like, or I won't use the pack until I start liking it again.

Really, if you don't like something that's free, just don't take it. You're not obligated to do so just as much as they aren't obligated to give it out.
