Exelance Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 (I've spent the last 30 minutes searching for answers, no i'm not good at searching) I'm a new server admin, I have a hosted server with 768mb of ram and i'm curious if thats enough for the 5 people currently playing. We are running Tekkit 3.04 with EE disabled and Forestry added. I have several plugins installed(Lapis portals, Essentials, PEX and a timber plugin)I also have NoLagg. I often get the "Server can't keep up" message even though Nolagg tells me i normally have over 200mb of ram left unused. Would upgrading to the 1gb package help? I'm hosted through BeastNode. On occasion i will get chunks that update very slowly, sometimes taking more than 10-30 seconds to show any change (placed/moved blocks). These chunks will appear in my house, i've had other members say they get similar issues, a chunk will not update while they are mining and they can see into the ground. All the cave systems are visible and the like. We have no mega construction, no super advanced railcraft lines (Current world is less than a week old). I just started a small RP sorting system tonight. Currently there are only 2 Quarrys on the server, one is unused. We do have 11 or 12 World Anchors placed around, could they be causing the problems? In the end, I'm just looking for some assistance stabilizing my server. (Sorry if this is the wrong section, please move if it is.)
Dyamahl Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 i to get that msg but i dont really pay attention to it because the server stays running but you can turn that msg of in bukkit.yml turn warn-on-overload off and then it wont show anymore
megamanheroful Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I'm a new server admin, I have a hosted server with 768mb of ram and i'm curious if thats enough for the 5 people currently playing. We are running Tekkit 3.04 with EE disabled and Forestry added. i got that too though you can ignore it if it is'nt doing anything and you get 5 players per gb of ram so you should host it with one or it might crash or lag extremely but you need to have unused ram on that computer to keep it from crashing. So if your just running minecraft and the server you should up it to 1gb although you haven't noted how much ram you have i'm guessing you have 2 so 1g with server should work. Also you might have to lower the ram the tekkit client (the thing you use to play the game with) by clicking (options>memory to allocate) then change it to 512mb wich will leave around 488mb for the system. So if you close background applications it should work
Exelance Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 I have a hosted server ~768mb of ram ~ I'm hosted through BeastNode. My personal computer has 8gb of ram, i keep Tekkit allocated with 2gb via the launcher. The Server package i'm running on is 768mb dedicated. Would upgrading to 1gb help? The major issue on the server is the chunk lag. Some chunks don't update unless you relog or they update very slowly. Some of the lag was reduced when i removed the 80 watermill that was being used and replaced them with solar arrays (same eu/t, not 80 solars). But the chunk lag is still there. I forgot to mention i'm also running Dynmap with the hires renderer if that makes a difference. The only reason i'm not hosting the server myself, is because my internet connection isn't strong enough to handle it.
darzavor Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 In any thread about plugins that cause the most lag, I always see Dynmap mentioned. It is the main reason why I havent installed this one yet. We are running a similar setup. Simple notebook with 1Gb allocated to Tekkit for 7-8 players (usually 4 max playing at the same time) . We only run Essentials, Group Manager and Residence plugin atm though. But this runs smoothly and I don't get the Can't keep up msg anymore, except when the backup is running and ppl are logging in at the same time.
OmegaJasam Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I think a little while back I remember reading on the Beaatnode area that NoLagg was causing lag. Check for updates to it. Consider removing all your plugins to see if that helps. Dynmap I think can cause problems. I would defiantly try disabling it. If it is /very/ chunk related try to work out what it is that is causing it. Lots of low timer rp systems, eu networks, /huge/ amounts of flowing water (This caused us issues with our 64X64+quarrys which were over areas with lots of underground sourceblocks... it seemed to be struggling to do all the water calculations
megamanheroful Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 try updating it to 1gb of ram and see if that makes a difference and remember to do this left click the server launcher then change it to java -Xmx1G -Xms1g -jar Tekkit.jar nogui pause OR java -Xmx2G -Xms1g -jar Tekkit.jar nogui pause OR if you want to java -Xmx3G -Xms1g -jar Tekkit.jar nogui pause
Exelance Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 I'll be sure to do that. Though i was under the impression that the Beastnode servers didn't launch from the launch.bat. i could be mistaken though.
megamanheroful Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 oh i've never heard of beastnode i thought you were just using the launch bat
Exelance Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 So I'm upgrading to 2gb of ram. I'm hoping it will fix the problems. Here is an example of the chunk issue. I was just digging around the house and noticed the dirt wasn't visually breaking, so i kept going and fell into one of the holes i made, this is what i saw. Every time a chunk doesn't update properly and you dig in it, you can see.. that. After a short while, or a relog, it updates properly. I've been hunting for whatever could be causing this, but no single block seems to be causing it, its just random.
