RobertDalton Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I'm currently running a server with 1.5gb of Ram, we have 6 players and there isn't any lag, but as we all push to the end game mark would it be worthwhile upgrading to 2gb of ram or would that not make much of a difference? Also thinking of allowing another 4 people on would I need more then 2gb Quote
McBorg Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 Looking at what I have done in the past 1 gig is struggle town 1.5 is adequate with the occasional restart 2 gigs for a small server is cruising. 1 thing I did learn the hard way is that is that when the server runs into trouble people will disappear quickly Do the endgame then let the extra people on when its less critical In this post someone stated that ran 30 on 1.6 gig? :/ http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/tekkit-server-requirements.19634/ Quote
prenetic Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I find it really depends on what you're doing. If you have a handful of people on who are playing the game and not making massive changes spanning multiple chunks and causing hundreds (or thousands) of block calculations then you can typically get by with very little resources so long as you restart every so often or configure more aggressive garbage-collection. I'm not sure what the nature of the differences are between vanilla/Bukkit and Tekkit but Tekkit screams with a few optimizations to the JVM at run-time, even when performing some crazy operations. darzavor Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 We run tekkitish server (our own modded version but generally same mods) on Ubuntu with 7 players with 1Gb allocated. But it is a machine that only runs the server, nothing else. It doesnt even run X server. We had some mishaps, like overflowing chests at quarries that ppl forgot about etc that caused the console to spam the 'cant keep up ' msg, but this was resolved easily. The server runs 24/7. We only run a few plugins though, which could make a difference. Quote

As far as pipe overflows go, the NoLagg plugin has some helpful functionality to prevent a server from dying if there are too many item entities lying around. Also thinking of allowing another 4 people on would I need more then 2gb Why ask rhetorical questions? In the absence of hard evidence, here's what to do: If you start experiencing lag: buy more RAM. If you don't experience any lag: stay with your current amount of RAM. Quote
Expozay Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 With 2GB of ram you'll be fine with 10 people. However I suggest at -least- 4GB for a smooth server with a 20less player peak. Quote
