technic launcher updater has stopped working

Question

Posted

Launcher Version: the latest

Operating System: windows 7

Java Version: java 7 JRE

Antivirus Program: AVG

Description of Problem:

Upon opening launcher the messege "technic launcher updater has stopped working" appears, and then goes away and launcher fails to open. I have deleted the launcher file and tried to reinstall but it wont let me. i even deleted java and reinstalled and nothing has changed. I've seen this very question asked several times and have yet to see a valid answer/solution. It seems most questions are followed up with others claiming the same issue and yet no one actually answered the question. I had performed %appdata% and opened the launcher via this method but this too eventually failed and ended in white screen. Please only reply IF you have a solution, NOT simply stating you have the same problem, the questions never get answered when this happens. Thanks.

Also, i have the AVG turned off during this process.

Jorcer I was making a joke too, about the Americans and about women and masochists derive sexual pleasure from pain so that doesn't really describe me.

Another definition defines masochist as someone who receives gratification from having pain or ridicule inflicted on him or herself, but the pain does not have to be related to sex. Emotional abuse is sometimes the preferred method of affliction for a masochist.

Oh, and Jorcer is not a woman, so that theory doesn't work, also the women in my life are lovely people.

Regardless, you shouldn't argue with women.

Pretty sure the common denominator is that they all have 32bit systems... ;)

And I've seen a few with this problem that have 64 bit systems, they're few and far between, and more often than not it's a different problem entirely, but there are a couple bug reports out there.

I was going to argue, but I though better of it ;)

I just wish this guy would realize that we do try to help, but we only help when the person asking for help uses their brain.

Edit: and apologize for being a jerk, I'd like that too.

I think he does but he doesn't like it because he would need to put some effort into it.

You two want to help me go through bug reports and find all the ones that have to do with the .exe not working? Once we've identified them, it makes it easier to find a common denominator (besides the fact that they use 32 bit OS). We could compare them to each other, or to my computer, as I actually have the same problem (the .exe not working) but I don't bother about it because I jst set up a shortcut to the .jar on my desktop.

When I am done this class I will see if I can compile a few. I'll start at the back and you should start at the front.

Okay. I'm determined to figure out what's causing the problem. If it turns out to be a problem with the launcher, I'll grab the source off of github and start digging there. If I can't figure it out after that, I'll decompile my copy of the launcher (I still have the .exe file, even though it doesn't work) and compare it to the code on github, to see if there are any differences.

Hubby is cooking dinner, and I'm making the cat some toys, but later this evening I'll help as well. I've been using the bug reports to teach myself how the launcher and it's pieces work, so this should help in my quest :)

I made a spread sheet of the information I was able to get, solely from the report format

I'm noticing that most of the problematic people's AV's are ones that dislike the launcher. Norton, AVG and McAfee all give false positives most of the time whn trying to run Technic.

Also, "Latest" and "newest"... So damn useful.

And now that I think about it, that already about one page out of 169! Good job Ash!

From the spreadsheet, it looks like the common denominators are Java 7 (for all but 2) and unknown java bit. I'm gonna throw a SWAG (Stupid Wild Ass Guess) out there and say that maybe java 7 is causing the problem.

Greenwolf, that's the only common thing I've found, I can't seem to find the 32 bit ones, or the couple of macs I saw

Xylord, I just searched "stopped working" and "exe stopped working"

I have a feeling that the issue has to do with Java 7, which would explain why downgradin to Java 6 works as a solution (although not a very good one). I think that the way Windows and Java are interacting with each other might be to blame, as the .jar works fine, but the .exe to run the .jar doesn't.

Who said it only works with Firefox?, You don't get support for posting like a 5 year old, don't use it if you don't like the mods, don't let the door hit you on your way out and Google controls the ads, not the admins. Also, Get Bent
