Make sure Java 6 64 bit is at the default, as Mac LWJGL doesn't like Java 7.

And he should probably uninstall all of his other Java's

EDIT: Also, why did you quote the entire OP?

Dunno, I do that sometimes. Java 6 64 and 32 both come with OSX, so he should leave those, and Java 7 is a little messed up, but there is no way to remove it afaik.

I can add some information. I need both Java 6 and Java 7 64-bit JDKs on my Mac because I'm a software developer. I've gotta test with both, and I've got to test on Windows, Linux and OSX.

This issue was really brought on by the recent OSX update. They removed the Java Preferences feature, indicating that it was no longer needed. Unfortunately, as is typical for Apple, they removed a feature that was needed by a minority of their users. Java 6 was *NOT* removed by the update, as others have indicated. It's still there, only the browser plugin and Java Preferences were removed.

Here's the problem: Java 6 and Java 7 are both on the system, but without Java Preferences, you can no longer select the default Java. I used to be able to get Technic launcher to work because I could simply move Java 6 to the top of the priority list. Without Java Preferences, you can't do that (I believe Java 7 becomes the default).

I'm not certain what's happening under the covers, but I suspect that Technic launcher is using Java 6 and it's launching Minecraft under Java 7 (or vice-versa). I can provide more details if somebody can give me a little guidance on where to locate the log files. I'm also a pretty competent Java developer, so I can handle some complex instructions if it'll help others.

Those familiar with Macs know that just removing a version of Java is not exactly trivial. The instructions that apple gives are useless and insufficient. If there's something I can do to make the launcher work with both versions of Java present, that'd be great. I have no expectation that the Technic developers should do this, so I'm hoping some more experienced Mac folks can help with a work-around. I'm technically savvy, but relatively new to OSX.

I can still access java preferences, no matter what version of java has priority/ whether i boot in 32 bit or 64 bit modes makes no difference, It still doesn't work. If i have java 6 64bit as the top priority in java preferences, the launcher wont even open, I get a little cog turning in my system bar that when clicked on displays a box saying technic launcher workflow running. nothing else happens. only with java 7 as the top priority does the launcher ever load but then fails during mod installation.

Weird thing is, I'm running in 32 bit mode yet the launcher will only open with a 64 bit version of java as the top priority... No matter what version is top priority while running in 64 bit mode, the launcher will not open.

I do not have mountain Lion, I am running OSX 10.7.5 as I stated in my original post. The technic pack used to work fine then all of a sudden just stopped on day, one thing i noticed is that the java app that sat in my dock while i was playing used to say org.spoutcraft or something like that and now just says Main.

Are Java Preferences still there in Lion? I wonder if Java applications on Mac usually detect the default JRE based on the browser plugin file. I think it used to be set up using a soft link to the default Java. Since the plugin file is now gone for Java 6, I wonder if that's what's giving the Technic Launcher heartburn.

Will Minecraft run under Java 7? I've heard conflicting information.

I found some more information:

Determining the default version of the JDK: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/install/mac/mac-jdk.html#version

Determining the installed version of the JRE: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/install/mac/mac-jre.html#version

These methods are probably not reliable any more, especially the last one that relies on the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin link. You can't change that any more. Once you've installed the Oracle JRE/JDK 7, it's going to point there. There is no alternative because Apple's Java 6 doesn't even have a JavaAppletPlugin any more.

I think the only short-term alternative is for Technic Launcher to look for Java in known locations on the Mac.

The other issue is that Apple's clearly phasing out their own version of Java. I doubt that you can even install the Apple Java if you don't have it already (Can anyone confirm that?). I wouldn't be surprised if a later update removes it completely. Then you'll only be able to use Oracle's Java 7. Once they do that, I can safely say my applications don't support Java 6 on Macs. In the meantime, I'll have to keep testing with it.

How does Technic locate the default Java? Are y'all just using the system path? If that's the case, we might be able to get it working by launching Technic from a script that temporarily puts Apple's Java 6 first.

Not a lot of that meant much to me, whilst not being computer illiterate java and the way it operates is foreign ground to me, any solutions on the horizon for my problem?

I got it to work. Pull up Terminal and enter the following:

PATH=/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin:$PATH

cd /Applications/Technic Launcher.app/Contents/Resources/launcher

java -jar technic-launcher-latest.jar

...and everything works. That's not too practical for non-techies, but it's a proof-of-concept. It shows that you just need to get the right Java in the system path and everything will work. This could be done in a bash script with an alias on the desktop. I'll post complete instructions in a while.

Okay, here's some instructions on how to create a script and get an alias on your desktop. Text you should enter into the terminal are in italics below to separate them from instructions. Key presses are in bold. Keypresses separated by a "-" mean that you should hold down the first key while pressing the second key.

Apologies to those experienced on Macs, I'm probably committing several atrocities here.

Open up Terminal (press Alt-Space and start typing "Terminal" until it's found, then press Enter).

Enter this:

cd /Applications

sudo pico TechnicLauncherScript

You'll be asked for a password. Just enter your Mac login password.

The pico editor will open up. Copy and paste the following into the editor (to copy and past, select the italic text below, then press Command-c, then click in the Terminal window, then press Command-v or you can just use the "Copy" and "Paste" commands in the menu)

#!/bin/bash

PATH=/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin:$PATH

cd /Applications/Technic\ Launcher.app/Contents/Resources/launcher

java -jar technic-launcher-latest.jar

To save the file and close the editor, press Ctrl-o, Enter, then Ctrl-x. This will save the file and close the editor and leave you back at the terminal prompt.

Now you've got a launcher script in your Applications folder, but it won't be executable yet. Here's how we fix that. Enter the following in the Terminal window.

sudo chmod +x TechnicLauncherScript

You might be asked for a password again. If so, enter your Mac login password again.

That marks your script as executable.

You're done with the Terminal. You can close it.

Now you can start the Technic Launcher by double clicking on "TechnicLauncherScript" in Applications.

The rest of these instructions are just a convenience if you want to have a link to the launcher on your desktop.

Open a Finder window and browse to the Applications folder. You should see it under "Favorites" in the left side of the Finder window.

Scroll down until you find "TechnicLauncherScript".

Right-click (or click with two fingers on your touchpad) on the TechnicLauncherScript file. A menu will appear.

Select "Make Alias". You should see a new file in your application window called "TechnicLauncherScript alias". Drag this to your desktop (with your touchpad, click and hold on the file with one finger, drag it with a second finger). You'll now have a link on your desktop.

Let me know if that works for you. I'm not sure how much variability there is with different versions of OSX. Perhaps some more experienced Mac folks can contribute a more elegant and simple solution.

One thing to note. My script will leave a terminal window open on your desktop after it launches Technic. You can safely close it once the Technic Launcher is running.

And one more thing - this will work only until Apple removes java 1.6. Apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere: Does TechnicLauncher/Minecraft work if Java 7 is the only JRE installed on the system?

Sorry, stopped in mid-sentence above. Where I said:

"You're done with the Terminal. You can close it.

Now you can start Technic Launcher..."

It should say: Now you can start the Technic Launcher by double clicking on "TechnicLauncherScript" in Applications.

Sorry about that.

Nope.

My method to successfully run my Tekkit server and client (Running OS-X 10.7.5) after those apple bastards removed the Java preferences utility was similar to this one but slightly tweaked. I first downloaded the latest Java from Oracle SE 7 "u7" and did the following:

Server side:

1. Check Java version using "Java -version" in terminal

2. If necessary, to change Java version to 7 (7 is needed for server), then run this command in terminal:

/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.7.0_07 --exec javac -version

3. Navigate to /Desktop/MC/Tek ### Note, this is where I store my server launch script, so replace this path with wherever you have it.

4. Run this terminal command (starts the server)

bash launch.sh

Client side:

1. Check Java version using "Java -version" in terminal

2: If necessary, to change Java version to 6 (6 is needed for client), run this command:

/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.6.0 --exec javac -version

3. go to downloads folder (in terminal)

4. Execute command:

export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home

5. execute terminal command (launches technic launcher.)

java -jar technic-launcher-latest.jar

All in all, I am furios with Apple for this change... what a waste of time. I also agree that eventually, it would be nice to have technic launcher compatibility with Java SDK 7 for OS-X users.

Thanks for that. There should be a PSA to NOT UPDATE JAVA. Also, it's not the technic team's issue. LWJGL doesn't work on v7.

Apologies. That was a typo in my post. The first line of the script should read:

#!/bin/bash

I missed the first forward slash on the path. I've fixed it on my original post.
