Hello all, I recently got roped into helping a friend run a server. He's not very technologically inclined but wants to start a server and since I built his computer he asked me to be the server admin.

I will be the first to admit that even though I have a lot of moderation experience I'm a little over my head but I've enjoyed the challenge so far. I've got a tekkit home server up and running with the addition of forestry and the portal gun mod as a test with only minor hiccups along the way. Port forwarding and block ID conflict resolution FTW. But he wants to have a dedicated server for us, some friends and maybe a few vetted Internet acquaintances.

This is all still in the planning and research stage and I've got two basic questions.

ImI'm not sure where we are with finances but I need some info on server hosts, I'm pretty sure a dedicated Minecraft server host service is the way to go but again I have literally no experience in this area. I'm a quick learner but I need a starting point

Also I know griefing and lag issues can make or break a server and need some suggestions for mod items and such to disable or restrict to help with this. I have a decent idea of what plug ins to use to help with griefing and protections but as far as disabling or restricting parts of mods go I don't know where to start. It may just be my naivete and I may have to change my mindset since I will very well likely will have to deal with malicious people but I don't play Minecraft with the intention of abusing the system, so to consider what ways others may attempt to do so is a little foreign to me.

Other than that, any general tips, tricks, or help is welcome.

Also depending on what other plugins you have you might want to restrict Nuclear Reactors.

There are also plenty of Dupes which may or may not break your servers economy if you plan to have one, and can in my experience create lag issues, (players building 100x100 sq HV Solar Arrays when in reality 6 HV solar arrays would work just as well and in reality they would have only had the resources and patience to make 1 or 2.)

I'd recommend using TekkitCustomiser and *possibly* TekkitRestrict (I don't personally use TekkitRestrict anymore, I keep trying it and it keeps causing errors of one kind or another for me.)

As for Server hosting, I recommend CreeperHost.net low prices, great support, and they give you full access to your VPS giving you maximum control over your server, unlike most other minecraft hosts which only give you web based control and maybe FTP.

Another note, make sure you check out the EE Patch which fixes lots of issues with EE items bypassing protections (eg factions or towny)

Depending how much money you have you may want to restrict World Anchors, Dimensional Anchors, Teleport teathers and the like as well as DM Pedestals (50+ watches of flowing time, creates lag. Not to mention people using the EMC sugar cane farm which if setup wrong will crash your server in 3 seconds flat.)

You may also want to put restrictions on things like Mercurial Eye, Philosphers Stone, Ring of Ignition, Zero Ring, Infernal Armour, Abyss Helm.

if you want a complete list of things I've restricted myself see: http://robynsworld-forum.guildsite.net/index.php/topic,6.msg7.html#msg7 (Personally I've made lots of stuff on that list available to players who reach a certain playtime, or have made a reasonable donation.)
