Cant use more than 512mb of ram for the technic launcher

Okay I am having a lot of trouble because I cannot play certain modpacks due to crazy lag. I can only allocate 512MB of ram to technic and when I try and put more it just simply does not start up the modpack, i currently have 64-bit java and 4GB of ram, I have checked everything and I still cannot find out whats happening due to many things being way too outdated, PLEASE HELP!
