Why is "Failed to Login: Bad Login" a surprise?

Question

Posted

Technic Launcher has been around for almost a decade. I recently started playing again to be hit repeatedly with the error: "Failed to login: Bad Login" whenever I tried to join a tekkit server. From the discord I've seen that this issue impacts everybody, and it occurs when Minecraft.net (Or Mojang) is down. Every response I've seen is blaming Mojang and saying that it will be fixed once Mojang fixes their end.

But this issue is not for any other launcher. Regular Minecraft works fine, we can join any server. Other launchers work fine, I can use Badlion Client, Voids Wrath (another modded version), etc. Which only leaves the possibility that Technic relies on some assets from minecraft.net, that seemingly no other launcher relies on. I'm not a very technical person so I don't know anything about that, but it seems like other launchers have fixed this, is it unsolvable in this context?

When I first joined the discord, I see dozens of other people spamming the tech-help channel, asking the same question I'm wondering. Checking the FAQ results in nothing, the question isn't listed there. The staff's response is to try restarting their game and logging in again. Then I looked on Discord's search bar "bad login" to find nearly 800 results, stretching back to 2015. Why is everyone so confused since it's been going on for so long. Even if the problem can't be solved, it's ridiculous that nobody can respond to the *most asked* question. I don't mean to come off as rude or insulting, but this is something that needs to be changed in my opinion.

There's multiple reasons for bad login. All of them are either an issue on Mojang's or the user's end. It is not a launcher issue. See https://www.technicpack.net/article/bad-login-error-on-some-older-modpacks.157 for the reason why everyone is getting bad logins recently on old Minecraft versions. As this explains the issue you and everyone else has been experiencing lately.

To clarify an inaccuracy, the default response for bad login is to log out of the launcher then log back in. Restarting the game does nothing. There's no FAQ for this since 95% of the people reporting issues with bad logins are using cracked launchers or have used them in the past and still have stuff laying around interfering with the login process.

The reason that restarting your game doesn't work for the recent bad login issues is because Mojang's legacy login/session servers have been having stability issues lately. If they're unreachable, then you'll get the bad login error.

When this issue occurs for specific users and not everyone running older versions of Minecraft (such as Tekkit Classic which uses MC 1.2.5), it's generally because they're logged into more than one copy of the game or have something blocking their connection to the login/session servers.

Newer versions aren't affected by this issue as they authenticate differently from older versions.

Contrary to Technic's announcement, I can't find any statements from Mojang saying they are going to or have shut down legacy login/session servers. The ticket linked in Technic's announcement does hint that Mojang is planning on fixing the issue.
