If you like Vanilla style adventuring, try Hexxit. If you like technology and stuff, go for Tekkit. If you like loads of awesome mods and tons of things to try, check out Big Dig. If you are a fan of the Yogscast's Tekkit series or prefer older retro mods, try Tekkit Classic. If none of these suit you, PLAY VANILLA!

Just kidding, if none of these suit you, you can make your own pack!

Personally, I like Tekkit best.

Eh, one could take the easy route there and blame the media for misinterpreting those and feeding it's versions to the masses, but at it's core, the problem is that even if the media never mentioned these things, people would still not care enough to look past what they heard some random person say, who in turn heard about it from his cousin, who oversimplified things when he explained it, etc, etc.
