If you can open the memory pull-down and it maxes at 1GB then you possibly have both 64-bit AND 32-bit Java installed and your system is defaulting to the 32-bit version.  You might want to check for multiple installs and make sure your path variable is set to point to the appropriate location

 

(Of course, this is assuming you are using Windows, as that's the only OS I'm familiar with)

Maybe you only have 2 GB ram in your computer/laptop.

Then the question might be obvious.

 

Check your computer's settings by right clicking your Computer>Properties and you can see in your Installed Memory.

 

If you have 4 GB or higher, It might be java problem.
