batmantheunicorn Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Hello, fellow minecrafters I don't know if my question(s) belong here, but I am not aware of a better place to ask. Anyway, I am having a difficult dilemma, but I am kinda clueless of what to do. You see, I want to have my own server where I can run many of the mods that you can find in technic plus some more. The modpack I want to run is called the Yogscast Complete Pack, a fairly large modpack. The server will have maximum 5 people playing on it and they might not be online all at once. Here is where my dilemma comes to play. How much RAM do I need to run this as fluently as possible, but at the same time keep the expences to a minimum? I have currently found a cheap host which can deliver servers with RAM ranging from 512MB up to 10GB. When I talked to one of the support people working for them, I was adviced to not choose a server below 2GB with that amount of mods and people. However, when I looked on some forums I could see people talking about having Tekkit servers with the same amount of people as I want, but they only had a server with 512MB-1GB of RAM, and that worked just fine. So, what do you guys think? Should I take the 2GB server, or will a 1GB server for half the price be more than enough?
Liszt's Right Hand Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Sorry, I couldn't resist: Your probably better to take the 1GB and see how it goes . There obviously trying to milk you for your money so id listen to forum. Anyway, i'ts better to upgrade rather than downgrade
batmantheunicorn Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 lol, that meme could't have fitted the situation any better But yeah, you are probably right. It isn't that big of a deal to upgrade in case it turns out to be too little.
disconsented Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Should be able to get away with 1.5GB with regular restarts
batmantheunicorn Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 Ok. I don't think they can offer 1,5GB, but I guess that 2GB would be a better alternative? And when you say regular restarts, what does that imply in your mind? Do you mean a restart once a week or even more often?
batmantheunicorn Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 But is that a restart which deletes everything that is built and done, or is that just a restart which gets rid of block on the ground and other stuff? I don't quite know how to explain what I mean, because I don't have much knowledge when it comes to servers. However, I think I have heard something about restarts which deletes stuff and restarts which just resets plugins and such.
Discord Moderator plowmanplow Posted July 19, 2014 Discord Moderator Posted July 19, 2014 "Restart" means to first stop your server and then start it back up. "Reset" means to set things back to where it was when first created.
batmantheunicorn Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 Oh, ok. Guess that shouldn't be a huge problem. I think that everyone who is going to be on the server are within the same timezone, so I can just restart the server during the night or early on the morning. However, will a 2GB server handle 240-250 mods and 5 players online without lagging, as long as I restart it every day? I guess it comes down to CPU as well, but I think the CPU power is pretty good on the server I am thinking about getting.
Roversword Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 As stated before...at the end it will be "try and find out". Just a sidenote: 240 mods is amazingly many...are you sure you want that? I have a modpack with about 120 mods and can only think of about 10 more to get until you are completely overwhelmed
batmantheunicorn Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 Yeah, I will just have to try. Well, 240 mods are many. The reason why I said 240 is because of the fact that the mod pack I want to run on my server has 244 mods. However, I think I will get rid of some of them. In the end, I might run about 200 mods. But it will also come down to what I can afford. If I have to get a beast server to run all the mods I want, I will just have to get rid of those I really don't need.
